Are there any downsides to having firmware version 5.4.0 instead of 5.3.2? Mostly in terms of using loadiine, but in terms of other hackability as well.

I'm on 5.4u spoofed to 5.5.1 and I have been able to do everything that 5.3.2 users can do so... I guess there's no real advantage. Just don't go over 5.4. But I don't see a reason to move from 5.3.2. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Pretty much, yeah. Unfortunately there's only userspace for 5.5.X and I'm just an Unassuming Venusaur. Who's also a stalker.

Loadiine GX2 functions in the exact same way for both firmwares. So you'll get the same Loadiine experience.

Otherwise, there is one webkit exploit which was patched in 5.4.0 but another one has been released which replaces it, so you might run into compatibility issues with older homebrews but they can easily be fixed to run with the new exploit.

5.3.2 ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But in all seriousness, 5.3.2 and 5.4.0 are very similar, almost identical. The problem is, 5.3.2 gets more development, which I think is enough to warrant staying on 5.3.2.
