To be released on September 28th, the E-Shop version of 4 Swords will include a new single player mode as well as 'retro' levels from Link's past adventures- this trailer

...shows Link's Awakening, Link to the Past, and Legend Of Zelda.

Edit- ONM have confirmed that it is pan-system, so if you have a 3DS and all your friends have DSi's you can still play with them. I have no friends with either, so I'm glad to see single player!
From ONM, more on the retro levels
This fancy new Anniversary Edition contains two brand new exclusive areas, each containing three levels. First there's the Hero's Trial area, which contains elements from other areas and will teach Link the Hurricane Spin if you manage to get through.
The other new area is Realm Of Memories, which is said to feature famous locations from other Zelda games. Make it through this potentially awesome new area and you'll get the Master Sword.

Boy, do I remember the days I played this with my friends in school. Those were the days...

I'd like to pick this up, but no one I know owns a 3DS....

Nice. Now I know how much longer I got to wait for this game to arrive. I know a bunch of people who have DSi's or 3DSs, so I can contact them and let them know when to expect it.

wow its actually free? im tempted to get a 3DS

I can imagine it's free since it's the 25th anniversary, and a LOT of people who got LTTP on the GBA never got to play four swords at all.

Too bad the DSiWare release won't have the bonus Link to the Past dungeon in it.

You don't need a 3DS. It's on both DSi and 3DS. Only reason I'd get a 3DS now is so I can play against myself, if they can communicate between the two systems.

Cheers, I was pretending to work at the time and only had time to cut and paste things before the directors came up the stairs!

finally, a date that isn't 'towards the end of the month'.
I really need to get myself a 3ds, but I don't want to trade in my dsi for it...
(sure, I have 100$ set aside already for the 3ds, but I'm kind of attatched to my dsi...)
