I think it could go up a little because with recent Japanese earthquake etc , they are struggling to get memory chips etc after some production plants where badly damaged.

this problem is starting to affect pc memory prices already with some sites bumping prices up by 30% due to a lack of supply.

You do know that the consoles are not made in Japan, right?

Don't they all have to sell it at the price Nintendo sets by law? ...thats why game consoles never go on sale on black Friday....you just get free stuff with them
Nintendo hasn't given a set price for the 3DS like they did for the DS Lite and DSi (XL), they've left the pricing on the individual stores. They originally wanted the stores to sell them for £230, but then changed their minds. Some stores are selling them for as low as around £150, while others are selling them for as high as around £280.

I take it that Nintendo expected all stores to sell them for £230 - £300, but kind of backfired, as most are selling them for around £195.

There is indeed no price set by Nintendo.

I for example in Europe am getting the 3DS for 229,99 EUR at a store which takes a little while to drive to.
Which is way better than the 249,99 price. And that shop is also releasing it a night before! at 18:00.

And it gets even better:
They started a action, buy 3 games, pay only 2!

I want to get Ridge Racer and Samurai Warriors (already getting Street Fighter with the console free), and wouldn't mind getting Super Monkey Ball for free >.<

I don't think any game store here in London are doing that deal :/

Err, where? I've not seen either of those. As far as i've seen it's ranged between £167 to £250.

Note that i said around those prices. Tesco had previously priced the 3DS for £157, but changed it to that of a higher value. Argos had the Price of the 3DS at £275, but then decreased it and added vouchers.

some stores here in australia like dick smith and big w are selling at $328 (Despite getting them in for ~$322 each) while the game-centric stores like EB are selling at the RRP of $349. i'm willing to bet that after release the stores that have it below $349 will raise it up to that...

(they did so with starcraft 2 - $10 below for first 5 days then equal to rrp, pokemon black/white - also $10 below for first few days - and black ops - $15 below and limited edition bullet shaped usb drive for first few days)

Yeah but the Tesco price was never actually saleable and no-one ever got a console at that price (they just cancelled them). No comment on the Argos one.

As far as i can tell the cheapest 3DS that was ever sold here was £167.99

Oh right, i didn't know that Tesco didn't go through with the price, i thought that the people who already pre-ordered it, would be getting it for that price :S
The Advertisement Act clearly states that the product has to be sold for the price it is shown for, surely Tesco would get in trouble for this?

The price wasn't shown.
Law also states that "gross errors" can cause orders to be forfeited.
This means if the price is unbelievably low, they don't have to send it.
Since it costs 170 or so at trade, 160 is a gross error.

Also, the price was with a 20% off coupon which stated it wasn't applicable to the 3ds console.

The bold text would explain the reason why they were allowed to do it.

As for the errors, they are allowed to modify the price at any given time if they feel/realise that the price is not suitable. However, if the product has been labeled or shown for a price much lower then the products value, the store has no choice but to allow the customer to buy it for that price. (Due to UK Law)

It's similar to a scenario where a person purchases a product, and decides to return it untouched. Regardless of any price change done in the past few days, the customer will still receive the amount they originally paid.
