Review cover GameSir X2 Mobile Gaming Controller - 2021 Revision (Hardware)
Official GBAtemp Review

Product Information:

The infamous mobile controller that allows for Switch emulation on Android is back, and this time, it has a d-pad!

GameSir is back, yet again, with an updated refresh of last year's X2 mobile gaming controller. What's changed since the last time we saw this little controller, and is it worth buying it again? We'll take a short look at the GameSir X2 mobile gaming controller - 2021 edition.

Seasoned gamers will be able to take one look between the previous GameSir X2 review and this one and notice the one--and only--difference between the two. The most irksome detail of the X2 has been resolved, changing the Switch-like arrow buttons into a fully-fledged d-pad. Every other single detail is the exact same, but now you'll be able to play your favorite 2D games in a much more enjoyable fashion.

Clicky, satisfying, and handling diagonal inputs with aplomb, the X2's d-pad is a really nice one. It's far and away better than its main competitor, the Razer Kishi's, which is much mushier. I'd go so far as to say the X2 is better than the Kishi in every possible way, except for one thing: the analog sticks. After having grown accustomed to using Razer's mobile controller, I much prefer its analogs, which feel much more like real-deal controller sticks. By contrast, GameSir's are now a little loose for my liking, but they're worth dealing with for a better experience overall.

I recommend checking out GBAtemp's initial coverage of the first X2, because nearly everything from that review still applies here. As opposed to my coverage of the original, I no longer have access to an Android phone capable of emulating the Nintendo Switch emulator that is exclusive to this device. However, Egg-NS hasn't been updated since November, so nothing has changed since that review in terms of compatibility. [see note] If it worked back then, it should work now.

[UPDATE] Following the writing of this review, a new v1.07 patch actually went out for Egg-NS. This surprise update actually improves the emulator's compatibility and offers better performance in a handful of games. The official patch notes are a little lacking, but Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Soul of Darkness are specifically mentioned as being playable in this revision, as well as Pokémon Sword and Shield and Super Mario Odyssey having a smoother framerate. Having asked a friend to test how the new v1.07 update fares on their Samsung Galaxy S20+, Odyssey now has brief moments of playability, running at full speed, at least in the first world. and a dramatic improvement over how it played back in November. It's not perfect, but it's a major step forward.

Honestly, if you were looking for a good way to play your favorite emulators on mobile, this is the perfect little controller. GameSir fixed the one problem that I had with the original. I still think that it's a fantastic little piece of hardware; everything from the buttons to the triggers are responsive and nice to use, even start/select. Having an actual d-pad is the icing on the cake. In short, your takeaway should be, "yes, this is great, I love it, 100% recommendation".

So, why is the score lower? Because it has only been four months since the original X2 came out. I'm glad GameSir addressed the lack of a d-pad, but I also feel like they just alienated anyone who bought the thing back in October. I'd have rather they spent a little more time improving more aspects than just this--maybe have used better materials, added other things. If they want to go and further enhance the analog sticks for an X2 2021 2.0 release, then it'll only look more awkward, and it'll only make people more apprehensive to buy one. Perhaps I'm just being nitpicky.

At $70, it's cheaper and better than the Razer Kishi, and a much more comfortable alternative than using a controller clip. Everyone who commented on the original review wanting a d-pad should absolutely be pleased, and should take the plunge...unless you bought the original already.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Compatible with even the biggest phones
  • It won't scuff your phone when you attach it because rubber grips
  • Again, supports the cool Switch emulator
  • The d-pad is nice and satisfying
  • Clicky buttons
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Didn't really try to improve or change anything from the last version except the d-pad
  • The analog sticks feel a little loose
8.5
out of 10

Overall

It's still the same, great mobile controller that it was, perhaps even better than before, purely because it added a d-pad. However, it's such a minor change, and the only change at all, so did it warrant such a revision this soon after the original's release?
i have to add i just got one of these in the post last Saturday ! & at $60 its not cheap ..
BUT its cool and i can play COD Mobile Pubg much much better than i did with my PS4 Pad ... the main reason i bought this was because of the Button Mapping Tool ... so basically i can play any android game with it ... super useful for me as we play 5 player cod at work when its dead ...( Thursdays ) ....
you can use it on Switch ( i still dont have one :( .. but you could if you did ..& you can wire it into your Pc/Laptop if you really had to .
overall i'd give this thing a 8 outta 10 .....
the bad thing is the buttons are set to Switch 3DS style not PS4 or Xbox .... but the Gamesir App is promising a new firmware that lets you change it to Xbox = PS4 ........... but its a headache when playing Stradia or Xbox games .. but you get used to it .... until that update
i just with it came in Black .....
like the Keshi did but that Keshi pad is very uncomfortable after a while of playing & has not a got a decent mapping tool so no COD or PUBG ect .... most probably could with a side app like octopus game mapper ....

Thanks for this review.
This might be of interest for user with large phones: the seller states that this newer revision also allows for longer phone: 173mm vs 167mm for the older one.

Indeed, this is one of the few actually decent phone gamepads that manages to support my big ol' Galaxy Z Fold 2, which is pretty cool.

Man they was on sale for $200 new from Samsung about a month ago but I was too late.... By 3 days...!

I'm loving mine since this weekend... My only gripe is that the R analog stick seem a little to low for me.... But you get used to it... The new one comes with a red case for the gamepad... Absolutely perfect for throwing at my cat...

Last thing how do I get the switch emulator? I'd give it a try... Works great on my PC... I don't know about my phone tho....

but now you'll be able to play your favorite 2D games in a much more enjoyable fashion.
...If you don't mind unaligned sticks, anyway. If you do, then...you're SoL, since there's unfortunately no alternate model replicating the Wii U GamePad.

Mine's coming in a few days, I can't wait to give it a try . :D
It's fun on COD Mobile for sure... Ive been trying to set up the Switch emulator.. But failed lool if u figure it out let me know mate... I was using my files from pc Yuzu which works great.. I think super mario odyssey is a xci file maybe I need another type... Oh well it's doesn't really matter... But you will love this controller...

I don't think it exists.. If you have the cash of course... A Win GPD.. I bought a Nvidia shield portable a few years back.. & it was OK but I wouldn't recommend buying one at all... As th screen seems so low brightness compared to say a Vita or even a modern phone.... Also I've never used a Win GPD.. But it looks like a cool handheld

I was tinking about GPD looks great, and thanks for heads up about shield.

Anyway, i was thinking in context of phone acessories, like its way better to have phone with gamepad than to mount one wierd looking thing.

well i would reccomend this Gamesir X2 i have had mine for about 5 days only but been using it quite a bit when i can .... & its simply great to use for me the triggers are over cl-icky ( they sound like a pc mouse ) & when you get it in the box they give you a red case and 2 pairs of analog caps ... so i but the larger ones on ... & after my few few trys i really didn't like the R analog placement it just felt too low .....& that was my main gripe ..but actually after taking the large analog caps off it all felt more natural to play and comfy .... maybe after playing COD for a while i just got used to it ... but yeah its nice slightly over priced & the main point for me is ...
i don't know if you tried to play COD Mobile with a ps4 pad ..? but the latency is way off so much so its better to go back to touch screen..but with this pad most probably because it not using WiFi .. its 100% accurate feel normal all the way

I don't think I'll be using it for COD or some mobile games that requires a gamepad (unless FFBE War of the Visions allow me to), but mainly for emulation purposes, I'm greatly interested in how good the GameCube emulation is on it.

But I'll try to set up the Switch emulation and let you know if I succeeded. What phone are you using? I'll personally use a OnePlus 8 Pro.

I bought this for my phone during cyber monday because of your review. It works pretty damn great for all emulators I've thrown at it yet, and the overlay function from the app makes it work great for pretty much everything else. The only thing this is truly missing is audio passthrough so it could offer headphone support.
