Game Features:
Roguelites are a subgenre that will never die, especially when you throw cooperative multiplayer into the mix, and Hutlihut Games Void Crew is a frantic 1-6 player jaunt that tests your mettle and drops you into fierce space battles, launches you into intriguing expeditions and lets you have fun through cosmic exploration.
Starting the game, you are met with a short 15-minute tutorial course, whereby you learn the ropes and understand the mechanics and intricacies of Void Crew. You have a ship, a homunculus, and a vast galaxy ahead of you, but first and foremost, you have a ship to protect as well as commodities to obtain, build and maintain.
The tutorial section serves to help you navigate the ship's systems and methods before you get into the deeper waters of the extended galaxy. You begin by plugging in your homunculus, which is essentially a foetal key that starts up your ship and intelligently communicates with you to explain your current situation and what is expected of you.
The first real skill you must learn is void jumping, or warping at speed, from one point in the galaxy to another. Pulling levers and setting coordinates, you can explore the deeper reaches of the cosmos, finding new points of interest, cargo, and more.
Once you have the core pillars of your ship's plethora of systems and intricacies, you can begin to engage with missions. The missions are where the meat of the game lies. Fending off attacking raiders or battling over rare resources becomes the mainstay of this franticly engaging game.
Interesting Lore, Engaging Teamwork
You play as an Ectype soul, meaning you can be resurrected after death, which is extremely handy because you will come under fire plenty of times in this game. As a METEM clone, you are part of an army of followers fighting for humanity's survival against extinction and reclaiming lost territory.
With four main roles to choose from, you can specialise as a pilot, an engineer, a gunner, or a scavenger. I opted for gunner at first, because it was a more lenient role for me to start with, but gradually I diverged into a pilot-come-scavenger mindset, which meant leading more explorative expeditions and hunting down the more interesting artefacts and materials.
Best played with friends, Void Crew is a game that wows from the very beginning. Graphically, there are some impressive extraterrestrial vistas and incredible granular detail to be found within your quarters. Playing single player, you can get auto turrets, and automatically repairing items that prop you up in your times of solitude. Automated modules are thrust upon you as a lone wolf, but as a team, these are tactfully removed to make the gameplay more cooperative and compelling.
There are quicktime-style events for repairing malfunctioning components. For example, if a pipe bursts, you must triage it with a swift button combo, and then you can repair it with available materials, ready for your next adventure.
Incredible Atmosphere & Intense Situations Evolve Quickly
Some of my favourite and most intense single-player missions involved using the EVA jetpack to retrieve or repair something outside of your ship successfully. The process of opening airlocks, depressurising, and exiting the safety of your craft might be a regimented chore, but it's necessary to follow the safety guidelines to prevent fatal accidents.
Using your jetpack outside is, initially, a game of pushing your abilities to the limits as well as balancing jet squirts vs oxygen consumption. I was absolutely captivated the first time you did a spacewalk; it's so all-encompassing that I almost lost all sense that I was playing a game, and was, in fact, enjoying a simulation on the IRL space station or something for NASA. It's incredible.
Selecting specific quests with specific loadouts yields bigger, better bonuses, and with the larger payouts comes more intense danger and increased jeopardy. No risk, no reward is the best way to describe the ethos of this title. You constantly need to break new ground and push into the unknown to reap the best rewards, honing your adventuring skills, and gaining the knowledge to construct more advanced weapons, vehicles and materials available in the universe.
All the while, you're looking over your shoulder for enemy raiders and incoming trouble. This is where having a solid crew makes all the difference. As a single player, you have to spin plates and manage everything, with a little assistance, whereas the added benefit of having several sets of human eyes on things is that you can be on the lookout at all angles and react swiftly and accordingly to your designated role.
For example, if there's a hull breach, engineers can patch it up quickly with tools, fabricate parts to upgrade things from collected loot crates and use the contents and alloys to recycle them into new weapons, mods and equipment. Gunners can blast away incoming threats or clear minefields, and the pilot needs to navigate their surroundings, constantly relaying the status of the ship so that the crew can keep it from completely breaking down, filling with toxic fumes, imploding, or exploding. It's a living, breathing ecosystem that relies on each cog in the machine to be alert and ready to get hands-on as soon as is necessary.
There is no feeling like discovering and scavenging some rare materials or blueprints as a team, only to find yourself swarming with incoming danger and having to fend it off while the rest of your crew extracts or aborts. When it all works out, you feel like part of a well-oiled team. It's truly captivating!
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Each run will net you around an hour to two hours, and there are quite literally infinite runs you can undertake. Every mission has its learning curve, which I found extremely steep at first, but gradually you will become acclimatised to the functions and intricacies, which leads to muscle memory kicking in and gameplay becoming more natural each time you play.
Playing as a team is essential. Luckily, this game supports 1-6 players and is fully crossplay compatible with the Xbox community, so it's quite easy to fill a team and even better to experience with friends.
Void Crew is a fun, frantic, and team-focused game that pushes friendships and tests camaraderie. If you can easily assemble a crew, it's highly recommended, but if you're going it alone or playing with randoms, then expect some frustratingly tough experiences and a steep learning curve for a long time.
Verdict
- Massive scope and infinite gameplay.
- The more players, the merrier!
- Epic looting and shooting gameplay.
- Overwhelming at first
- Flight controls are basic
- A PSVR2 mode would be amazing
