It's crazy cos it can boot both legacy and UEFI live USB devices that I flash Ubuntu on, but it won't for the life of me recognise a Windows USB as bootable. Sadly @Coto I have tried what the author of that page says, no luck. Might come down to buying a blank DVD if I can't sort this out

well, pretty sure your BIOS is UEFI. Also, newest BIOS UEFI enabled devices are locked to a certain OS architecture. For instance I have a shitty tablet PC and I am allowed to install Windows 8/10 x86 only, no matter what x64 OS I try it simply isn't detected. Also UEFI devices are usually recognized and booted through a hotkey F button (such as F9 or f11 or ESC)

also you could try another USB device (so it is recognized as removable media, these do work)

You talking about the setup ISO, or a live USB? I had a lot of trouble getting the Win8/Win10 setup USB booting on UEFI only systems, in the end I found Rufus to work if you load the ISO in it, and IIRC I had to set it to UEFI only mode, GPT and FAT32.

But Microsoft has their own Media Creation Tool which should work fine.
