@impeeza, the number of people who will argue until they're blue in the face that hot dogs aren't sandwiches is staggering. Some further food for thought, Tacos are also sandwiches.

We have «empanadas» which are a corn tortilla Filled with minced and seazoned beef and potatoes, closed on cresent shape with the borders sealed, then is deep fried. And that is so a sandwich which «empanada» means literally between breads

I'd like to circle back around to the original question about the open-faced sandwich. I completely agree its not a sandwich but is it pizza ?
By the way, a hot dog is indeed a sandwich!
