One thing I've also been doing is using an audio splitter that's a solid piece of plastic. It's really loose in every audio port, so I figure that will come out first if I pull on it and prevent too much strain on the cable. I weakly soldered the earbuds and dropped my music player with the splitter. The splitter came out and the earbuds were okay.

The splitter is also hard to break because it's a solid piece.

Try sugru on the ends of the cable. It's great for providing strain relief to cables. It dries out rather quickly though, so buy the smallest amount you can, unless you plan to use all of it quickly. It can extend the life of already damaged cables, but obviously that's not gonna last as long as applying it to an undamaged cable.
