Maybe as weapon? Werewolf claws?

If you really have to work such things are in the way. I would not want such things.
The limiting factor nowadays surely is the touchscreen. If the phone doesn't recognize input anymore...

Traditionally it is a sign that you were rich enough to not have to work the fields/manual labour/prepare your own food, see also being pale like you did not spend all day in the field under the sun and being fat though the latter two have been inverted since office work and easy sugar became a thing.

I find them nasty, but then again, I'm a germaphobe.
I might accept nail polish since it's something I've done in the past. Actually considering doing UV Nail Polish (it turns into a polimer) because my nails have been breaking so easy lately... anyway... nay! Trashy taste!

@SylverReZ No, I do that too.

Our technician has already given an anthropological explanation of the phenomenon, so I can only say this, as a female hand fetishist: I find them extremely fascinating and exciting. 😘
To hell with their historical significance. 😋

and if you go to China a long little finger fingernail was once a similar thing, though apparently today is considered the mark of an executive nose candy user.

At this point I want to mention women torturing themselves with "shoes" -- high heels. I wouldn't go as far as calling this shoes.
They are not practical. Not usable for anything. Not durable and ugly on top of that. They hurt the user.

Many things are not easy to comprehend.
