Should not be the same, buuut, with this new culture of given a wrong meaning to the words...

RPG: Role Playing Game
FPS: First Person Shooting

It could be a RPG what have FPS on it, and FPS game which have a RPG game play, is a mess.

I better go to play Super Mario Bros.

Early and classic (Japanese) RPGs had a top-down view, and were about one character, whom others joined, to accomplish a mission, visiting villages and defeating evil beings (Dragon Quest series). FPS games are more recent, in 3D graphics, where a character (whose arms you see only) proceeds from one stage to another shooting everything he encounters, bad humans or monsters (Doom series).

I don't understand the definitions either.
Doesn't Role-play just mean "acting out or pretending to be a person or character"?
Doesn't that make litterally every game a role playing game? Even in CSGO you are arguably role-playing as an isreal defense soldier the same way you role-play as cloud in final fantasy, right?

Yeah, an action-rpg, maybe one of the earliest in that genre.

If you want to be technical, just about every game involves role playing. But the term RPG is more based on the tabletop role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, it's the video game equivalent to those. The definition makes more sense for tabletop/board games because most board games actually don't involve roleplaying, unlike most video games.
