And when unforeseen events, losses (inevitable, useless to hide them) come, far from being a burden for others, you will be the one to give courage, to support others and to decide; and this will happen naturally, almost effortlessly. Such is the strength developed by those who are firmly rooted in the present reality.

Objection. Forgetting the past and not planing is guaranteed to make somebody do mistakes - possible the same mistakes over and over again.
"Live in the present!" sounds nice as a slogan, but it is fundamentally against everything that makes humans able to estimate; subsequent restrictions how to interpret the statement aren't going to change the underlying problem.

Such a limitation would be for example: "Of course you should remember that fire is hot from the past and not burn yourself again and again." But even in more subtle cases, having past experiences in active memory can save you from a lot of trouble.
Seeing the world having gone nuts in the last two years I'm happy to have memory.

Having the possibility to judge things comparing them to values accumulated over my life. My private (and not pleasant) youth experiences give me the ability to see when a young person is in danger to experience similar (my predictions have been painfully accurate in this regard -- and I assure you that there is nothing paranormal about these predictions; just plain deduction).

It's obvious that you need to memorize experiences to learn from them and not fall into same mistakes.I wasn't denying that.I meant one should not dwell on past, tormenting and self-punishing oneself unnecessarily and wasting emotional energy. We must try to be always new, fresh, ready for the changes, not living of nostalgia and regrets.I'm talking about the emotional side, not the cognitive side.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

It's not mine, it's that of all of us...your own is a dream, self-delusion, selfishness...destined to shatter at the test of facts.

Reality is literally subjective and everybody views it differently. What might work for some might not work for others.

More subjective reality is, more it moves away from fact, from "what is". Schizophrenic, paranoid, drugged, drunk create their own illusory reality, highly subjective, and project it outside, but it has nothing real, it is only a dream. If one wants to live like this, no one forbids him to do so...but in this way he digs his own grave.

"[…]the emotional side, not the cognitive[…]"
They go hand in hand.
Past: Remembering emotions is equally important to avoid getting them again. Keeping those emotions alive allows better empathy.
Future: We have to evaluate what impact our (planned) behavior might directly or indirectly have on ourselves and others; and we have to evaluate what others might be doing next.

Living in the present – deer edition.

My own observations:
Deer noticing me directly know that a carnivore is in sight. I just need to look at them and make two steps towards them (from great distance) to see them running away like there is no tomorrow otherwise. Looking away from them and getting nearer in concentric circles is very well possible.

Deer will fixate a human doing so, watching his/her movement but won't immediately run.
Now think about the potential outcome for the deer, their limited planning and inability to extrapolate future movement of a carnivore using obfuscation. In nature this is the last mistake.

Disclaimer: I don't hunt animals; I neither have a license for that nor weapons, nor any interest in that.

Who says it's not all a dream? Who knows if any of this is real? It's real from our viewpoint, sure, because it's all we've ever known, but there is actually a decent chance we are in a simulation. Because once the knowledge of a species reaches a certain point, the only way to learn the answers to the remaining questions about the universe is for them to simulate their own.
The Real Jdbye
The Real Jdbye
If a species lives for long enough, they are bound to reach this roadblock eventually. We would have no way of knowing if we are in a simulation unless the outside universe made contact with us, and even then we probably wouldn't understand them well as their understanding of the universe would have evolved so far beyond ours that it would be beyond our current comprehension.
The Real Jdbye

In the end it doesn't really matter, because it's real to us, so it's as real as anything, but it just proves how subjective reality actually is. Everything we see and hear with our senses is how we perceive reality, but we know that some other species see reality very differently
The Real Jdbye
The Real Jdbye
Even some humans see reality differently, like those who are colorblind or have synesthesia etc. But just because they see reality differently doesn't ultimately mean what they're seeing is wrong. They're seeing the same reality as us, it just looks different to them. Because what we see and hear is a product of our senses, that's how our brains make sense of the world.

I repeat to both of you that I am reasoning from an emotional/ affective perspective, not a cognitive/intellectual one. Your points are correct as cognitive psychology. We are considering 2 different levels. No point in arguing about this. Anyway, I'm glad to hear your different opinions. :)

Some users are already complaining about the over-seriousness of this topic, and are beginning to experience a certain headache.

Anyway, my own view of life is well expressed in the book "The Power of Now" by german writer Eckhart Tolle, which I highly recommend to everyone.
Unfortunately my poor english (and laziness) does not allow me to express myself at my best.
