I'd like to make it so I can have apps "hidden" in that the channel looks exactly like an empty channel, but hovering your pointer over it will let you forward to whatever app/dol you want. I know with ModMii and CustomizeMii you can replace forwarder paths, but is it safe to build a forwarder without a channel icon, banner, etc? Or is there some other way I can accomplish what I'm asking?

It must include a banner and icon if it's not a hidden channel (by hidden I mean not interactive at all on the menu).

To do what u want you would need to create a channel that looks like it's empty. If you change system menu themes often you might need a few dif versions.

I don't change the system menu at all, so I'd just need the one version that matches stock.

Sounds like I probably just need to get a hold of the graphic used for empty channels and create a channel forwarder with that.

Is there a way for me to customize it?
Like, how do you mean? The idea was for a forwarder to look like an empty slot on the Wii menu, and the icon is exactly that. The banner is a recreation of that at a larger scale.
Are you asking if you can change the banner?

Yeah, so for example, I could make it look like a Sonic Mania channel or something like that.

I like this idea, before I start working on it, how would you like this implemented?
The way I see it, there are two paths this could take:
  1. Select homebrew to be forwarded to as it is now within the app, then, optionally, an option to use a donor .wad's banner in place of the "invisible" one.
  2. Same as above, but requiring the user to have the banner files themselves extracted.
Option 1 is what I'm leaning toward pretty heavily, UX wise it's just simpler. But I figured I would ask you since it was your idea and perhaps you have custom banner files that haven't been compiled into a .wad that you would like to use.

I dunno, probably custom images provided by the end user if you’re ok with that.

I imagine anyone wanting this would want it to look like a blank channel consistent with a custom system menu theme. In which case analyzing the installed theme or a provided mym or csm file would make sense. You could maybe even point it at the wiithemer site's repository of themes as most users probably are getting their themes from there.

I'm not sure how feasible this would be based on how themes are packaged and how your tool might be able to interact and extract the relevant bits, but I thought I'd share my 2 cents anyway. Personally I don't think I'd care to have a pseudo invisible channel like this, so don't consider this an official feature request or anything.

I had sort of considered custom themes out of scope but the method you described is pretty interesting. I will look into this because it would be cool if it worked for any theme.

This is definitely possible, but image size, audio format, length, etc. are all things that normally get checked by desktop tools for making channels like this. It would be nice to simplify the process and have it all be on-console, but it would require some design decisions regarding those things. I will look into it though, bc its definitely better UX than the other option, in terms of customizability.

Yeah, I was referring to a PC tool.

Oh, in that case you could just create a .wad using the app on your Wii, then take the .wad and change only the banner, keeping the icon and forwarder data the same. Any tools you would use to edit .wad files would work fine for this, it doesn't need custom software.
