Anbernic shows off new handheld with Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chipset

Anbernic has shown off the RG DDS, a new dual-screen Android handheld that looks suspiciously similar to a certain Nintendo handheld. It's being dubbed as their "flagship dual-screen handheld console" and is an evolution of last years RG DS and the RG DS Plus that arrived last month and ...*checks email* in breaking news has now been superseded by the RG DDS ++ model (kidding).

Powering it is Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, the same octa-core chipset used in the Retroid Pocket G2. Notebookcheck reckons that should put it ahead of the AYN Thor, which runs on the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

The screens are where Anbernic has delivered. It describes them as two "customised" IPS panels: a 4.7-inch display on top and a 4-inch one below. Despite the size difference, both run at 720p with a 300 PPI pixel density and reach 500 nits, which Anbernic says makes for a seamless dual-screen experience. That resolution is also why the RG DDS is said to handle 3DS games at a perfect 3x integer scale.

It will be available in black, white and blue. Unfotunately, Anbernic has not announced pricing or a release date yet.

Said in the past Anbernic was probably planning an entire 3ds related line lol. If rumors are true under $200 it won't be a thor killer but a good budget option. Bit worried about the design Nintendo could go after them for it if they care enough.

These console brings up a very important question: why the fuck Nintendo Killed the 3ds?
Fusionning the 3ds and switch killed their portable market completely.

Also, apparently the Snap G2 Gen2 has lower benchmark scores than the old Snap 8 Gen 2.

M8 the top screen is oled the bottom is ips I can see how it's confusing from the key specs though may want to update that.

LOL! The Switch is a handheld, not a console. A handheld that can be hooked up to a big screen, but a handheld nontheless. The ONLY market Nintendo has left is the handheld market!

And while the 3DS was successful enough to murder the Vita and send Sony out of the handheld space, it sold half as many as the DS whereas the replacement Switch became the best-selling console or handheld of all time. So obviously Nintendo was smart to "killed the 3DS."

I love my N3DSXL and won't buy a Switch. But Nintendo made the right move.

I have no idea how SoCs compare, but this looks absolutely sweet. 3x integer scaling is great to see and they look indistinguishable from New 3DS lineup, except of course for the much better sticks, active cooling, and thickness... While it adds in vibrations, it's a huge bummer it doesn't have a 3D screen, but that's to be expected.

The name sounds incredibly stupid, but indeed, it could be the dream dual-screen device. Better hope it delivers, and that it has better build quality than the originals... they're so fragile inside...

But most importantly: "Every action feels precise and erect"

Sometimes I believe Anbernic has a folder on their Desktop with files like:
projectV1
projectV2
project_final
project_final_really

and instead of just releasing one they will just release everything
 
Those DS clones are all so sexy, I'm a sucker for that DS design. However I have a dual ips New 3DS and I'm not sure why I need this. An OLED screen upgrade for 3DS would be way cooler.
 
And soon the really good double dream duel screen aka the 3DS and the really good double dream duel screen eXtra long aka the Anbernic RG 3DS XL
