Dreamcast Game Recommendations?

Happy Birthday!

The Dreamcast has the best versions of many 5th gen (PS1/N64) games, I would recommend those--especially Rayman 2 and Hydro Thunder.

In addition, there is an active Dreamcast scene, with both new homebrew games and ports.

For Dreamcast exclusive games, you can't go wrong with Daytona USA or Soul Caliber.

Thank you!

I forgot about Soul Caliber having a dream cast port, I'm so used to hearing about the GCN version and the ports that came after.

I'll definitely look into getting that since my sister really likes Soul Blade on PS1.

Is there a dedicated place I can look into the dreamcast homebrew ports? I'd love to look more into it since I've only heard of the Sonic Mania port.

    • Life simulator, can be incredibly boring

    • It's literally an aquarium screensaver

Thanks! I'll try burning these to a CD, as it seems options like dreamshell are pretty slow and going deeper down the rabbit hole it looks like it'll be the PS2 HDD hell all over again with the ODE mod haha
Dreamcast ODEs are incredibly easy to use, as long as you use the proper backups.

For reference, some REDUMP images (specifically if it has more than 3 bin files) won't work with the ODE because it contains additional data (mostly CDDA) tracks, but specifically because of how REDUMP dumps their images.

Those you'll have to use TOSEC images in the cdi/gdi file format instead.

The homebrew scène is now working on a Super Monkey Ball Arcade port for the Dreamcast.
You can already play GTA3 now, the way it was intended. And you can't go wrong with the private PSO servers for countless hours of fun.

Enjoy your birthday gift, and welcome to the next level.

Thanks!

I had considered phantasy star online, however I already have a gamecube account set up, however if they're not cross play I may have to get again so I can play with people I know have a dreamcast.

Ah I see, I'll have to look more into it then.

D2, I've heard of the first game of saturn, I think now would be the best time to play it since it's October.

Fish life, as boring as that sounds I feel like it'd look very good on my CRT so there's that!

Rayman has already been recommended, so I'll second that. It runs at a buttery smooth 60fps!

Chu-Chu rocket is a fun little diversion.

My favorite Dreamcast game of all time is Fur Fighters! I much prefer the Dreamcast version over the PS2 version.

Gonna throw my recommendations in too:
  • Jet Set Radio
  • Dino Crisis
  • Power Stone 1/2
  • Sega Extreme Sports
  • Sno-cross championship racing
  • Star Wars Episode 1: Racer
There's even a unreleased port of the hd version of Half life out there.

Obviously I had others, but they are already mentioned. There's many games that are ports or aren't exclusives, but look much better on Dreamcast, particularly PlayStation games.

I don't talk about that...that game, the bane of my life. I have deep childhood trauma thanks to that bundleware, PTSD type shit.:cry:

Yeah this is the case with the saturn too, this is why I'm glad I own counterparts for both gens so it's easier to know which port is better.

I've played powerstone via the collection on psp, how does it fair in comparison to the DC version of the games?

Nonetheless I do quite enjoy platform fighters, my favorite is digimon rumble arena 2.

Ikaruga, The House of the Dead 2, Shenmue 1 and 2, Zero Gunner 2.
I've actually heard of all of these it's just been easy to forget they were for dreamcast but I definitely wanna look into ikaruga and shenmue

I've actually never heard of fur fighters, so I'll look into that.

Everyone is recommending Rayman, I've never played a Rayman game, guess it's time I started huh

Crazy Taxi (the original, not the 2nd), San Francisco Rush 2048, DOA 2, Le Mans 24, Dynamite Deka 2, Virtua Tennis, Capcom VS SNK 1 & 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2.
That's alot of fighting games, did they not have a darkstalkers game for DC?

I think Legacy of Kain had a DC version.
