Pokemon recompilation project gen1recomp adds FireRed and LeafGreen to its list of supported games

After adding support for Pokemon Crystal last month, the gen1recomp team are back again with the first third generation entries. Arriving amidst recent updates, both FireRed and LeafGreen are now playable through the lua-based application. At the time of writing, the game seems pretty ordinary, but if mods for the first and second generation are anything to go by, this could soon become the best way to play these games.

As with the other games in this project, you are required to supply a compatible ROM to be able to extract assets from. The latest version, v0.3.0, is available to download across Android, iOS, Switch, and a whole heap of other platforms. You can find the GitHub repo linked below.

Note for those interested that AI was used in this project as a tool to support development, with commits being reviewed by humans prior to being merged.

I appreciate the notice about this project having some Ai assistance involved in this.

Open soucre flash carts in the last year. Loads of homebrew projects coming out the scene. recompilation projects everywhere. i mean we are truly in the golden age of homebrew modding scene.

Only we just need new hacks for us to pirate... obviously

How awful, they're using AI in the 21st century! Can you imagine that? We're doomed.
It's unbelievable that humans are looking for faster ways to do things using tools. IDEs? No, I just program with zeros and ones in Notepad.

Notepad? Real programmers etch their logic into circuit boards like god intended! :teach:

AI is just a tool and all that, but...even if it was the greatest tool the world had ever seen, I don't have a ton of faith in it being used this way.

There's still a ton of bugs, pretty obvious ones that must have slipped past the "human review". Kinda feels like their goal is to push out as many headlines as possible, rather than to actually fix any bugs.

It's definitely playable, it's just the uncanny valley where everything is slightly off. With enough time you could definitely clean it up, but it looks like they're just gonna say "good enough" and move onto gen 4/5.

At least the dev isn't trying to hide their AI usage anymore, even if they are a bit weird about it still.

curious though besides VC/GTA3 (for using debug symbols allowing the T2 takedown) wonder why decomps rarely are targeted I mean besides the tileset assets Pokemon essentals code was written from scratch this is pure source i'm just scrating my head over it would anyone care to shed light on the subject?
 
Wow, imagine being so worked up over the use of AI that you feel compelled to complain about it on every front page post that mentions it's used. 🤦‍♀️

Excellent work being done here but like, if you don't approve then you are more than welcome to just play any of these games on real hardware... Because surely you already own the original physical game cart and hardware to play it on and rip the ROM from legally, right? Right???

Oh, AI use! Great, there´s people thinking in the project and the machine doing the tough work. If reviewed and tested by humans, goblins, espers or something, great. It´s so dumb to think that A TOOL can´t be used because a lot of people are afraid of it
 
Well, that was unexpected, going to have to change the name from GEN1RECOMP (There is already gen2 and now gen3 added.) As umm... cool as it is to have a recomp of this, I only hope that it's worth it. So far I tried enough to know it's needs lot more work than I figured. I beat the Yellow and crystal on it. But contained issues. I can't explain but it didn't satisfy me.. But I only hope if mods become the scope of rom hacks, that would be cool. But most people are already atuned to emulator and rom hacks since forever.

Not to bring the project down, because it's an amazing feat. But how do people see this as viable or even the better option? I guess I'm just more interested in recomp projects that struggled with accurate emulation over something that had little to no problem at all. Unless the end goal is to have a playground for easy modding, which I hope will be just as robust as rom hacks are, it's like novelty right now than a must have like Donkey Kong 64 Re-Kongpiled which has struggle to run accurately for years.

They just said "at least it was reviewed by a human". I think that's a reasonable ask for the Glorified Autocomplete Machine (that we're all indirectly paying for with higher hardware prices & tax breaks to millionaires even if we're not using it).

But shoot, guess I'm as good as Anti-AI if I want that, or transparency.

It's more likely than you think...

Besides, we've had emulators before this latest tech craze that play them just fine, anyhow

Real programmers use butterflies. They open their hands and let the delicate wings flap once. The disturbance ripples outward, changing the flow of the eddy currents in the upper atmosphere. Out of all decomps, the Gen 1 decomp is by far the most blatantly obvious vibecoded ai slop port to exist. wait for cybervisi0n's port or play on an emulator. Fuck this AI Slop consistently hitting GBATemp's front page

I mean we cant just ignore stuff that the scene will like. Its the reality of the sutation.
