A new system seller? What do you think about Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave?

From my post earlier this week you probably already know which game I'm talking about. Fire Emblem released yesterday to some pretty rave reviews. Looking at OpenCritic right now, 97% recommend the game, with an average score of 89. I've only just started, so don't go expecting a number from me quite yet. I've reviewed the past few games though and I do fully intend to do this one too.

For those of you who might not have been keeping track, Fortune's Weave marks the tenth major Nintendo-published title for the Switch 2. These are, in order of release, Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Kirby Air Riders, Mario Tennis Fever, Pokemon Pokopia, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Star Fox, and most recently Splatoon Raiders. I own every game on that list outside of Yoshi (I'll probably get that eventually!) and I can say I've had a pretty great time with them all. But would I consider there to be system-defining games there that'll see consoles flying off the shelves? One or two. For me, those games would be Mario Kart World and Pokemon Pokopia. Maybe a controversial opinion on the first one there, but the fact remains that Mario Kart is one of Nintendo's best performers, with World having sold more than 15 million copies at this point. It's always going to be tough comparing it to the predecessor but the game does stand on its own merits in my eyes. With some luck it'll continue to get better over time too, just as Mario Kart 8 did. Time will tell on that one though.

The real surprise of those titles will probably be Pokopia for a lot of people. It feels like it came out of nowhere and kicked up an absolute storm of positivity, getting its own console bundle pretty early on. I did review this one if you're curious for some more in depth thoughts, but it's all the good parts of Animal Crossing blended with all the creativity of Dragon Quest Builders, all with a coat of Pokemon paint. I knew from the start that I'd love it, but I'll admit the broader positive reception was a shock. Now with more DLC on the way and seasonal events to keep people playing between their major construction projects, the game still has more to give.

And that brings us to now. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is undoubtedly a colossal game, with reviewers being surprised by just how much there is to do. The game brings in some pretty refreshing graphics, pairing it with new control schemes, new mechanics, and as good a soundtrack as ever. I'm maybe two hours in so far and I can't wait to play more. So I put the question to you folks, do you think this will be the Switch 2's next major hit? With the site having recently regained the ability to throw polls onto the front page, you can cast your vote. Though discussion is naturally always encouraged too.

Do you consider Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave to be a system seller?

There's really no doubt in my mind that the game is good, but with a lot of criticism on the forum for the Switch 2 being that it lacks those big games to make the system worth picking up, I'm interested to know whether people think this one manages to cross the line. If you're already playing, let me know how you're getting on.

I like Fire Emblem but I'm no.

I nether have the time or willingness to spend the cash on a new system especially with everything going up.

Atm I have a lot of games on PC, PS4/PS5 and retro games I want to play so will focus on those.

Fire emblem is never a system seller. mario, mario kart, pokemon, zelda, those are system sellers. noobs would complain its to complex...

Never played a Fire Emblem game and am not particularly interested in the series, but from what I saw of the game, I would say it will for sure sell consoles. Graphically and from art design it looks fantastic.

If nothing else, it will be another good title that may make those yet undecided to pull the trigger.

From the currently available first party titles it's the one I'm most excited about, but that's probably not the case for most people. In fact the franchise almost died during the 3DS era, but fortunately it sold well enough. It's one of those franchises with amazing games that never really got popular for one reason or another, just like Star Fox, Metroid and F-Zero.

I don't think I've played much Fire Emblem or many games like it after Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, other than a couple of Disgaea games, and even then, it was maybe 3 games. I do remember playing one of the FF Tactics games and enjoying it.

The comparison is relative, IMO. If we are comparing it against everything, then it falls somewhat short of a system seller. System sellers to me are those that have broad base appeal - pokemon, zelda, mario. Or even animal crossing. FE is popular but it doesn't have as much of a reach as those.

But if we were to limit the comparison to just the TRPG/SRPG range, then FE can be considered a system seller.

Not that the fastest-selling console in history needs another system seller, but Animal Crossing, along with a themed (hopefully OLED) Switch 2, is that game. So is the inevitable 3D Mario and the next Zelda. Fire Emblem is not. Great game. Not a system seller.

I'm more of a story guy when I play jrpgs but so far from what I read about the story (I really don't mind that much spoilers), this game just isn't for me. 3 houses didn't even click for me too so I doubt I'd enjoy this one. The titles that I really enjoyed playing was during the 3DS era, mostly Awakening and Shadows of Valentia (didn't like fates that much too).
