I had a Wii U when it first launched, and I bought one again recently, I enjoy the menus, the background music, the Nintendo exclusives, but some other stuff like NFS Most Wanted 2012 ages very poorly, imo.

The Wii U console port of NFS Most Wanted 2012 is supposed to be the best, though I can't say it is anymore. It looks meh and runs kinda slow (30).

My favorite part of the Wii U? Miiverse. If you didn't use it you have no idea what you missed. 🤣

Even thought I really like it, I use it mostly to play Just Dance games; other than that it's just gathering dust in the living room, it's just unfortunate that I have no time to play games like before. But I bought mine in 2018, mostly to play emulators and exclusives, so I could not enjoy this kind of very specific funny stuff with the Miiverse.

Trash system.

Very little exclusives left. The Gamepad was poor at the time with an awful screen and was too unwieldy for action orientated games, The general menu speed was very slow.

Nintendoland was pretty cool.
Yes, Nintendo Land is pretty cool and even with its flaws, Nintendo consoles have one reason to be played... For its exclusives.

Like NFS Most Wanted 2012 I enjoyed it back then, not now, and I doubt Watch Dogs on Wii U is very playable to today's standards. Just a shame it wasn't reworked for the system.

Still love it... Not everything is perfect, but some of Nintendo's greatest games released here, such as Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Splatoon, Smash 4, Super Mario Maker, and some others. It's only right that Nintendo made Deluxe Version ports of some of these games to the Nintendo Switch, so that they can sell the same great game to a much wider audience. But those games are still just as enjoyable on my Wii U.

Some people dislike the Gamepad, but I really like it as a controller, it always felt comfortable for my hands.

I love the concept of the second display in the controller, it feels like a lot of potential was wasted. But there are some games where it really is useful (and not just Nintendo Land). Even in Mario Kart 8, it gives you some features that you won't get in the Deluxe version on Switch.
It's also a shame that the wireless range is so low, in the tight apartment building with thick concrete walls and crowded with wireless interference it can't even reach another room which is not that far away.

I love the operating system and user experience, the Wii U and 3DS really have soul compared to the Switch.

Not many third-party games, but there are some good ones. The Wii U port of Minecraft (legacy) console edition is probably just as great as on any other platform. Years ago, I spent many hours playing it in the local two-player mode, whenever a minecraft-obsessed friend would visit.

I'm thankful to the homebrew community, possibly the most important homebrew for me was HID2VPad, since I don't have any Wii U Pro controllers or Wii classic controllers, but I could use this software to allow visitors to use Gamecube controllers and USB-connected Nintendo Switch Pro controllers as full size controllers in multiplayer games.

Miiverse... I still remember it. It was.. weird?

Honestly i'm pretty fond of it. The Switch made it obsolete since it got ports of almost all of its games, but i still love to turn it on, play some games and fool around with it, homebrew has given it an extended life i pretty much appreciate, but it's a shame it doesn't have the passionate community machines like the Vita have. Retroarch being so unstable is a bit of a disappointment.

Still, i love the thing, i just wish it had a stronger community around it.

i've got mine in 2024 and i love it, a good system but mishandled by Nintendo. Luckily homebrew come to the rescue!
That is good, but if you've got a Backbone controller (or something like it) attached to a phone and it can run Wii/PS2/GCN/etc then there's not much reason to care about it. Except if you want to play Wii/GCN on a TV screen, of course.

I still love my Wii U. And in a way, it still has most of its exclusives: many Wii U games used the gamepad to a point where once they were on other platforms, it just wasn't the same without it.

NSMBU Deluxe is actually missing content from the original (no 5-player co-op, no gamepad challenges). Captain Toad's extra levels don't make up for the playability being compromised (the 3DS version makes up for it a bit, but the quality is so low it's practically not worth it). Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, Rayman Legends, and ZombiU were all designed entirely around the gamepad, so their ports arguably play worse. And of course, if they ever bring Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD to the Switch 2, they will be objectively worse. You don't realize what that second screen adds until it's gone.

Even games like Arkham City or Assassin's Creed IV (or lol, Mass Effect 3) may have worse visuals and worse framerates, but the gamepad really is nice for those titles. I don't know if I'd ever call them the definitive versions, but they are worth playing at least once to see what they're like. It may look like shit on the surface, but try actually playing it. You may be surprised how much you debate with yourself over the pros and cons, and find something lacking if you ever play it somewhere else afterwards.

We've seen this before. Resident Evil 4 has been available on every modern platform under the sun, in VR and with the HD texture mod, and people still gravitate towards the Wii version, just for its pointer controls. Same with The World Ends With You, where the Switch version has better graphics and music, more content, and even co-op, but without the DS control layout, none of that matters and any fan will tell you to play the DS version. So I don't know why it's weird that people would choose to play some games on Wii U over other "superior" versions.

Even Breath of the Wild, which is scientifically, objectively superior on Switch, still has mod support on Wii U that the Switch version lacks, and there are more and more elaborate mods coming out for it all the time. With all the homebrew development and BotW's decompilation, it's only a matter of time before someone manages to restore the original intended gamepad features.

And yeah, obviously games like Mario Maker and Splatoon are dead on Wii U because their online was shut down, but that's no longer an issue thanks to Pretendo, AND unlike Nintendo's shitty service, they're free (remember when consoles had free online? I do). Miiverse is arguably the best social media platform right now. No politics, no drama, just memes, cool art, and mild autism.

I also have to mention the Wii U Pro Controller, which is a contender for best controller ever made. It doesn't have gyroscope, which admittedly sucks, but its battery life lasts a ridiculously long amount of time (compared to the Switch Pro which lasts like 3 hours) and it weighs practically nothing. It also has a better d-pad than the Switch Pro.

And personally, I find playing GBA and DS to be a far better experience through VC injects rather than going through Retroarch's shitty UI and jumping through tons of hoops to set them up on PC, It may sound like copium, but I genuinely find playing those titles to be a comfier and easier experience here, and I much prefer playing on a dedicated console, on a TV, on the couch, as opposed to a handheld or a PC, where I have to worry about battery life, controller compatibility, or some other bullshit on my machine causing a crash or booting me out of the game. Y'know, some of us are grown adults and don't have the time or patience to buy specialized hardware and spend dozens of hours learning how to use specialized software, just to play games in a slightly more "ideal" setting. You people are spoiled.

The only thing I really hate about the Wii U is how it has so few third-party games. It has less than the N64, and that's saying something. Also, the menu speed is agonizingly slow. Loading the settings takes a fucking eternity.

I never had one myself back when it came out, most of my experience with it was at a friend's house, which I'd go over to play it with him and his brother quite often (we'd play smash 4 and i was a smelly Ness main), I can definitely understand where all the love for it comes from despite everything surrounding the console itself, even now that I own one

Looking back I see both sides of the coin and that's where I stand.

My favorite part of the wii u is definitely the virtual console, it's much cuter than the wii one

Well I really like it, you can basically play every Nintendo console up to that point in one system. I've a pretty decent PC also but playing games on old consoles it just feel good to me.
