Kojima Productions partners with XBOX for the development of 'PHYSINT', after PlayStation steps away

Hideo Kojima's return to the action-espionage genre with PHYSINT will continue in partnership with XBOX. The game was initially announced as a PlayStation-exclusive in 2024, but the publisher decided to step away.

"As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project," explained Hideo Kojima in an online post. "PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward."

Asha Sharma, XBOX CEO, added the following: "Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX".

For its part, PlayStation provided an update on the matter by saying: "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future."

PHYSINT is still in its early development stages. Last year, Kojima noted that the game won't be out for another "five or six" years. However, there has been some progress with the game as Kojima Productions planned to kick off casting, scans, and performance capture sessions in 'late 2026'.

Yes. I heard many people are complaining on Sony PlayStation is going to cease physical copies of video games Disc in year 2028.

Start in year 2028, I refuse to support Sony PlayStation anymore. Let smash internet servers to peices then wide blackout! Digital will become useless turned into massive wasteful straight to landfill. All digital of PlayStation hardwares will become useless then will force to recycle massive hardwares to another new hardwares (not PlayStation anymore). F to Sony PlayStation for force everyone into digital only is breaking laws! Many other companies are fill lawsuits against Sony PlayStation. I'm promise then I will never buy PlayStation. To Sony PlayStation, I'm sorry for your loss and you will face massive lost a lot of sales in new year 2028. I love you (Sony PlayStation) to death! Shovel Sony to death in graveyard. RIP Sony PlayStation! :nayps3:

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 will be my last systems then I will force to discontinued support to Sony PlayStation company then bye bye to die!

Sorry, I'm not fans of Xbox.

I'm happy to have gaming computers then I will continue to use for many, many years over video gaming systems. I hate digital!

If what happen if future systems cause major problems then I will return back to Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 10 then ignore Microsoft warning messages permanently. Microsoft is not respect to people complaining many problems in new operations like Windows 11, 12 and later.

Longest live Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 10 to gaming for many, many years to going and never end! Never stop play a lot of videos games on Windows XP, 7 and 10! :yayone:

Xbox finally got over their money allergy, just as Playstation became allergic to money.

The game sounds cool. It sounds like PlayStation style game that would sell like hotcakes. I will buy whatever hardware I need to play it.

As I read somewhere else

Sony saw "physi..." and thought it was a physical game disc

What are Sony doing lately? It's like they're trying to get as many people pissed as possible?

Even if the game was shaping up to be a disapointment, man, just take the loss and move on. The last thing they needed is more bad press.

Sony Group Corp.'s PlayStation pulled out of an upcoming game by the well-known designer Hideo Kojima because of concerns over budget, potential profitability and exclusivity, according to people familiar with the project.

One major factor behind the decision was the commercial performance of Kojima's previous two games, Death Stranding and its sequel, which didn't meet PlayStation's revenue expectations, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing information that's not public. But the new project has also missed deadlines and was on track to be well over budget despite being years away from release, the people said. In addition, PlayStation was reluctant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in another game that wouldn't remain permanently exclusive to the company's own hardware. Both Death Stranding games were "timed" PlayStation exclusives that were later released on other platforms. Kojima's closely held studio, Kojima Productions, retained ownership of the franchises.

Xbox, which has been facing its own overhaul under new Chief Executive Officer Asha Sharma, saw Physint as a good investment opportunity for several reasons, according to people familiar with the company's strategy. One key factor is the PC platform, where the Death Stranding games have generated some revenue. Earlier this year, Sony decided it will no longer release single-player PlayStation games on PC, Bloomberg reported. Sony would therefore not benefit when Kojima Productions released a PC version of Physint on its own or with a different publisher, as it did for the first Death Stranding. But Xbox releases all of its games on PCs and plans to publish Physint on PC and Xbox, said the people. The deal will also include film and television rights for both Physint and a second title from Kojima Productions, the experimental horror game OD. Sharma has said that expanding Xbox's properties to linear media is a significant part of her strategy.

Jason Schrier spoke about it. TLDR, it's same thing that happened with Konami during Phantom Pain. Budget being higher and higher and deadlines not being the 'tightest'.

Seems a bit silly, considering how much money they burned on projects that clearly had no future. Concord being a clear example. Same with Marathon really. Better not even mention that Monster Hunter clone with Horizon name slapped on it.

I think the difference is Sony owned the rights to those examples wheras all they get from Kojima is a timed exclusive that makes money without them when it releases elsewhere, thus limiting the potential benefits to Sony.

It sounds like he was asking more from sugar daddy than a non committed slut is worth.
