Seems that MercurySteam might be wrapping up development of a new 2D Metroid game called Metroid Ravenous.

It'll probably be good, but I'm curious if something like this - which would probably run perfectly on Switch 1 - would be a Switch 2 exclusive.

It'll be a business decision. I'd have thought releasing on Switch 1 would be better for sales of the game as the system is so popular, but releasing on Switch 2 exclusively could help drive sales of the Switch 2 system.

Switch 1 has a problem though: piracy. Any Switch 1 game can be played on PC.

I wonder which way they'll go. I'm guessing they'll release it as a Switch 2 exclusive title purely to beat piracy, but let's see.

Metroid keeps getting ruined over and over again...

The core of the game has always been exploring the world (alone) with little information.
In other words, you—as a human—face life forms on the planet.
Metroid 1, 2 and Super Metroid captured that true essence, Prime 1 and 2 did it too.
The rest isn’t Metroid anymore—it’s Mega Man in Kirbys World with A-Team..

Most importantly, there shouldn’t be any human characters on your journey because these characters ruin everything.
I want to be alone on the planet as a vulnerable human searching for items and not starting conversatios with Human characters..

Why does Metroid have to have such bright colors on the planet?-Kirby Dream Land..
And why is Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat now playing as an opponent?

I really like Metroid, but only when it stays true to its original philosophy.
I doubt the next Metroid will have anything to do with Metroid—it'll just exist in name only...

The Star Warsification of Metroid continues. I already felt this with Metroid Dread. Probably one of my biggest annoyances with the game.

As this one seems to Mercury Steam's Baby even moreso, rather than an old re-appropriated project it's even more prounounced now. In the character designs, the focus on fast-paced action, the logo design, the colors... That and the Heavy Metal background music in the trailer is probably as far away from a somber exploration of an organic alien planet as you could probably get.

But hey, people seem to love it, so what do I know.

I think there's a certain point where you don't like a series anymore. We've had companion characters in metroid games since what- 2003 with fusion? Other M, Fusion, Prime 2, Prime 3, Dread, and Prime 4 all had varying influence of other intelligent life during your adventure. Really, it's only Metroid, Metroid 2, and Super that are truly isolated. I love the isolation and atmosphere too, but I think it can be a balancing act. The presence of others can enhance the feeling of isolation if they're suddenly stripped from you.

Counterpoint- look how cool she is

I recently played Metroid Prime 2: Echoes for the first time after years;

The opening sequence has your spaceship crashing onto an unknown planet, you’re on your own.
It’s pure suspense—you never know what’s hiding behind every cave or door.

Metroid Prime 4 kicks off immediately in Call of Duty style, and you’re thrown right into the combat—no exploration, no sense of suspense, just survival in a brightly colored world that would put Alice in Wonderland to shame.

The new Metroid developers just don't get the essence of Metroid and are trying to import new content from other non-Metroid-games or create a new identity.

*You can't turn Michael Jackson into a heavy metal star.*

Apparently, a lot of people like it....

Fair enough and to each their own. I really wanted to like Dread, even got a switch when it came out. Right now I've been playing Prime Origins and that is so much more of a metroid game to me. Probably my favorite since Fusion

Yeah that's a bummer. I've been meaning to try prime origins. Glad to hear it's pretty damn good!

Something to think about :-)

Why is Zelda so successful?
Or what makes a game a Zelda game?

From the very beginning, the philosophy has always been pretty much the same: find the triangle, explore the dungeons to find useful items and rescue the princess.

These simple elements have been maintained to this day, of course the beautiful musical style.
Everything stays the same—only the setting changes so as not to destroy the core experience.

Metroid becomes an experiment in the hope of creating something.... what a shame.

I get way too frustrated with Metroid, but the unofficial Metroid 2 AM2R remake was absolutely amazing.
It’s way better at its core than Nintendo’s Metroid 2 remake.
When is the Super Metroid remake finally coming out—but please, not from Nintendo!

@tomberyx I see it the same way. To be alone on a planet and explore the secrets and danger of these planets.
What I also liked about Metroid Fusion (GBA), was that you were infected - the antagonist Samus AND the "commander Adam". I was so curious about the whole thing. To explore. Get little support via com logs etc.
This is the true Metroid essence for me. I like this even more then the prime series tbh.
