RPCS3 adds online PS3 trophy syncing through RPCN

RPCS3 has added online trophy syncing through RPCN, giving users a way to keep their PlayStation 3 trophy data backed up online instead of storing it entirely on one local installation.

RPCS3 has supported PS3 trophies for years, but until now those unlocks were kept locally. With the new system, users who have RPCN enabled can sync their trophy data to their RPCN account when launching a game.

The feature was developed by contributor FlexBy420 and required changes to both RPCS3 itself and the RPCN backend. The work added support for storing trophy data online, displaying trophies on user profiles, and tracking game and user trophy statistics.

During development, the feature was described as essentially giving RPCS3 users a way to "cloud save" their trophies. That should be especially useful for anyone who uses RPCS3 across multiple PCs or simply wants their trophy history preserved outside of a single emulator setup. RPCS3 is also moving toward showing global trophy-earned percentages, similar to the rarity statistics used by services like Steam.

There is one important (and probably obvious) catch, though. This does not sync trophies with Sony's PlayStation Network. Trophies earned in RPCS3 are tied to a user's RPCN account and will not appear on their official PSN profile.

In other news, this is a perfect time to give RPCS3 a shot, what with the entire "1 week PSN boycott" which will almost certainly cause Sony to reverse its decision to stop producing physical games.
