Years after this masterpiece was made, the ROM that I believe to be the only compatible one was taken down, is there any way to apply this patch to a different one?

You just need the original rom. Doesn't matter where you get it, but preferably dumping from the official game

Hiya! Just wanted to see how things are going. Well? Completely understandable if things aren't, just curious.

ggs guys, the curse of the DBkai translation has taken another victim.

They are saying that the translation project is dead in the water due to no response from deathkill since a little while but I'm pretty sure he'll back eventually when not busy dealing with life in general just like the rest of us. It's a miracle we even got this far but beggars can't be choosers after all. I will keep my end of the bargain and help with the English dub as I said I would two years ago once it is complete and we know what is written on screen, assuming rom file size restrictions can be bypassed.

HEY GUYS!!! I know it's been ages since the last patch, but things have been very up and down lately, that I genuinely couldn't find the time at all to work on this. First of all, the war that's going on was in no way a motivator, especially since I'm directly affected by it. And second, work hasn't let up at all, instead intensified as I started handling more and more responsibilities the longer I'm there, as they started trusting me more. So, I hope everyone affected by this sad situation is well and fine.

NOW TO WHY WE'RE ALL HERE:
I have finally completed the main episodes in all the chapters!!!! Yes, you read that right. For all intents and purposes (technically), the story of this game is now complete!!! While it might seem a bit trivial, knowing there's still about more than half the content left to translate, from sub-episode to what-ifs and tutorials, but to me, this is a major milestone. To think just 2 years and 5 days, and 19 pages of this thread later, we finally reached this stage of the translation, where all images (with the exception of the logo in the title screen, and some other stuff in the title screen), all the menu text, and now around half of the story is done, with anyone being able to experience the full-ish story of Dragon Ball Z from start to end completely translated! Albeit, early translation needs a major revamp, but that's something to be done at a later time.

WHAT'S LEFT AND WHAT'S TO BE EXPECTED
As for what's left, there's still the tutorials, the side episodes, and the what-ifs to be done. As for a timeline, you all know full well what to expect really😅. I always promise to try to be faster for next time, but at least taking this long always keeps your expectations low lol. Another thing I'd like to apologize for is the lack of replies I had over the last 2 months. For some reason, GBATemp logged me out, and I didn't receive any notifications regarding the thread or anyone posting on it, so I couldn't exactly reply. So, it saddened me when I found out today that someone posted that this was dead. At this point, all you fans should know from me repeatedly saying this; THIS PATCH WILL NEVER DIE AS LONG AS I DRAW BREATH!!!! If at any point in time I will drop it (which I promise you won't happen, because this is a pastime that is fun for me, so no reason to), I promise to inform you all here. Also, all the tools that I use are online for anyone wanting to take on the patch, for whatever reason, so even if I stop, this really can't die unless everyone who likes this game loses interest in it, which if you check YouTube, seems the opposite is happening.

Aaaaaaaaaaanyways, hope you guys enjoy this patch, and look forward for more to come. Till the next time! See ya!

Thank you so much for your work on this translation!! And don't worry I'm sure most people understand the situation is difficult for you right now, stay safe 🙏

PS: What tools do you use? I have little to no knowledge into romhacking but perhaps I can try to look at it

Well, for the text, I developed my own tool, you can find it on my github at this link, but for the graphics, I don't really recommend you look into it too much, because it too complex that even I sometimes feel like I barely understand it, but you can find it here. The graphics stuff is all code and commands, which might be a bit difficult to get into if you're not too familiar with programming, but the ndstexteditor should be pretty straightforward. You will, however, have to use a tool like tinke 0.9.2 to get the .sbt file that holds the text. I'm thinking of making some sort of app that helps manage the content of the game, without having to dive through the files, so anyone wanting to get into it can do so with ease, but it won't exactly be easy, or a short term goal in any shape, way, or form. So do with that information what you will.

Hi guys. I decided to create this patch to deliver a complete English localization of Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden, built with a focus on translation accuracy and natural, fluent phrasing.

The goal throughout was to make the English text read as though it had been written for an official release — not a literal, word-for-word conversion from Japanese, but a translation that respects tone, pacing, and characterization while remaining faithful to the source material. There still might be some minor issues to be fixed, though.

The game is fully translated, including:

- Main Story Mode, following the Dragon Ball Kai storyline

- All What-If episodes and their branching scenarios

- Side stories and bonus content

- In-game tutorials and help text

- Menu systems, character select screens, and battle interface text

- System messages, prompts, and status/hint text throughout

No text has been left in Japanese; every user-facing string in the game has been translated and proofread.

Particular attention was paid to:

- Accuracy — ensuring translated lines faithfully reflect the original meaning and intent, rather than approximating it

- Fluency — rewriting dialogue and descriptions so they read naturally in English, avoiding stilted or overly literal phrasing

- Consistency — maintaining consistent terminology, character voice, and tone across story mode, side content, and UI text

- Polish — refining text to fit within the game's existing display constraints (text box widths, single-line UI elements) wherever possible, so the translation integrates cleanly with the original presentation

I want to thank deathkill781 for his earlier work.

The patch is built to apply against the Japanese ROM with checksum CRC32 320145b9.

AI ass poser stealing all the hard work @deathkill781 did, throwing it into AI and putting out a low effort translation after all the work was already done. Shameful af tbh.

Here's some screenshots of my translation for the first episode, the Piccolo's tutorial, the Tien and Chiaotzu side mission, and the King Kai's training session:
This was clearly created with no passion and without any reference to the source material. It was clearly fed to an AI agent and translated, and doesn't even acknowledge that it's AI. Anyone with half a brain can see that. I actually take my time to reference the anime and Manga to give a faithful and accurate representation of what dragon ball is supposed to be. Just feeding it to an AI to create slop and posting it on a dedicated thread that has been in the work for more than 2 years is plainly disrespectful. While I respect that you might have put in the bare minimum amount of work for this, go ahead an post it on your own thread. Don't try to take over another person's thread that is actively being updated. You didn't even take the common courtesy writing the post yourself. No disrespect to the use of Ai, I personally use it myself, but at least when I do, I would disclose it. The only time AI was used in this project was for the tooling, and even then, it's all based on code I developed on my own, that was only refined using Ai. Nothing translation related used AI in the slightest. If any of you want to use this version, you're more than free to. But this is plain disrespect to the original creators that started working on this patch, and to me, as the Ai most definitely used my tooling and my info as a base to complete this translation. Honestly shameful. I wish you the best in life, but hope that you take this post down. You're more than free to post it on your own thread, and disclose your use of Ai, instead of hiding it.

This isn't something I would like to comment on, especially as someone who uses Ai on the daily, as my work depends on it, but at the same time, the least you could do is respect the efforts of those who were working on this before you, and not slop your way through this, putting the bare minimum of effort. And you guys might think I'm acting sour because someone beat me to it, and maybe I am, but at least I've been honest from the very beginning about every step in my process. I didn't just use AI and slopped my way through this. I made a post explaining every step of my process. So yeah. Hope y'all understand, and I really appreciate every one who stuck by me along the way.
