Xbox to increase in price again in August, Series S set to hit $500

Remember when you could get an Xbox Series S for $300? Those were the days. Microsoft has today announced the latest in their console price hikes, seeing their once-affordable system now exceed what the more powerful Series X cost at launch. Set to come into effect on the first of August, you can find an overview of the increases below:
  • Xbox Series S (512GB): $399 ➜ $499 (25% Increase)
  • Xbox Series S (1TB): $449 ➜ $599 (33% Increase)
  • Xbox Series X (1TB Digital): $599 ➜ $749 (25% Increase)
  • Xbox Series X (1TB): $649 ➜ $799 (23% Increase)
In their press release, Microsoft shine a light on the state of the industry, noting that games consoles are being hit particularly hard on the back of them typically being sold at a loss out of the gate. With less headroom to eat costs, they're inevitably passed onto consumers. With Microsoft expecting another doubling of storage and memory prices by fall of 2027, future price increases also seem likely.

Funnily enough (anecdotally) I noticed Xbox sales had increased recently, if MS was able to hold on to lower prices than Sony I wonder if they might have had a chance of actually competing for the first time in years this Q4.

Nintendo Switch 2 is still $450, btw. And it has some physical games now.

Used PS5s are as low as $350 if you have a controller, and it has physical games.

Series X has 50GB discs which often means incomplete/dogshit disc builds, and Series S is now $500?!

I liked the Xbox One after the always online crap was "fixed", and the One X was much better than PS4 Pro, so it's disappointing to see how far Xbox has fallen.

This is pure greediness as the Series S is weaker than the Series X.
OMG! Pure greediness is so ignorant, Marc. Their costs just went up, and you want them to not reflect that in the price? EVERYONE'S costs have gone up, some dramatically. And it's "greedy" for a for-profit company to raise prices in light of that? Grow up. You're too old to act like an entitled gamerboy.

This is not fucking normal. 6+ year old hardware getting 2/3 price increases is insane.

How can anyone justify it? Honestly. Fucking let the entire industry crash as this point.

Not the best step, but in general this is probably more related to shortage of stuff in the hardware market than anything else. And why we are seeing price increases for multiple hardware vendors (Nintendo, Sony and now Xbox). And lets not forget the Steam Machine and its ... well pricing.

Prices going up happen due to reasons hardware vendors are not always the root of evil from.
(And yes sometimes the hardware vendor is to blame ... I for sure get that)

Yes this is coming from a guy who is considered a Nintendo fanboy, who owns multiple Switch1s and a Switch2).
BUT who also has Xbox Series X and a Xbox Series S ...
Not meant as any form of flex at all but to give perspective to my comment.

Fuck these greedy fuckers boys, buy second hand and pirate wherever you can (at least triple A games). PS5 piracy scene is thriving.

Man if only we could instruct AI to just do an RM RF command and wipe out their entire databases in one go. Can the AI bubble pop already? And if anyone dares try to tell me that AI is the future? Then you're just as bad as Bezos telling us humans that drinking water is making it harder for AI to be efficient.
