I Agree 100% I tried to get this happening but no one with the skills have stepped up to do it, I would love to see this on WiiU but I haven't got the ability :/

There were some tests a few years ago on Tiramisu but they were never finished. It would probably be easier on Aroma because of the way WUHB is setup like you say, but things would need to be added to the WiiU's Retroarch source too I think to load a game on Core boot automatically. My advice ask around the WiiU Discords perhaps someone will take it on.

At the end of the day 3DS has had the ability to use Retroach forwarders for years so it more than possible on WiiU. :)
Ah, so it isn't as simple as compiling a wuhb to pass arguments then is it

Is it normal for the RetroArch Aroma port to crash and freeze a lot when first opening or switching games? It seems like a coin flip whether it will freeze my system or not... not sure if there's something wrong with my install or what. Everything else seems to work fine.

I'm using the latest build from Edit 4 (12/05/26) for Aroma.

Do you have custom background images and boxart/thumbnails enabled? I found that mine froze a lot when I'd move my selection across systems/games too quickly. The workaround for me was to decrease image resolution and navigate the menu slower.

No, I only have a text-based list. It typically doesn't crash when navigating the menus, it's always either loading a game or entering/exiting RetroArch. I've just installed Tiramisu and will try that version for comparison, I guess. I have a feeling it's just the Aroma build is really buggy. I also noticed in some cores like FBNeo, in vertical arcade games the RetroArch navigation menu squares that show what option you have selected don't align properly with the menu items. They're inverted 90 degrees into a vertical orientation.

Update: I tested the latest RetroArch build for Tiramisu and it seems solid as a rock. I guess it's just the WIP Aroma build that has problems, but it's to be expected since it's essentially an unofficial beta. Only annoying thing is all of the individual rpx for the cores show up as separate apps in Aroma, which I use for everything except RetroArch.

Update 2: Apparently you can get rid of all the individual rpx files under the wiiu folder, I don't know why they include all those by default when they aren't needed.

Now I just need to find a forwarder that works for the Tiramisu version so I don't have to go into the Mii Maker app every time to start RetroArch. The unofficial one linked in the first post freezes on the splash screen for me. I installed it using the legacy version of WUP Installer GX2 for Tiramisu. I don't understand what this means, so it may be why it's freezing:

You'll need to apply signature patches whenever you start your console. For CBHC users this happens automatically, while users of other methods will have to refer to their method's documentation to make this happen.

I do have the sigpatches file in my Tiramisu environment folder but I don't know what they mean by needing to apply them when starting the console. Anyone have any idea?

Yeah I get that too, I think everyone gets that. I chalked it up to being just a buggy build, that a merged build would have all of these features fixed. Freezing when closing from the home menu, freezes when you switch between cores and builds, all things I experience too. Kinda sucks since you're forced to power the system down completely to get out of it.

I never used the tiramisu build myself, interesting to hear that's more stable. Its been a while since I installed retroarch on my system but i don't remember having the issue with all of the individual rpx files. Maybe i removed them too and forgot, not sure. Happy you were able to fix it.

Yeah a more up to date merged port of retroarch is something we're all hoping for, though seems work on that has been halted without any indication of when it may it returned to. Would be nice to see a more stable version on aroma one day. Cannot speak myself what causes the crashes, but know it is something that everyone experiences in these aroma builds.

Thank you for verifying. I wasn't 100% sure if it was my mod, my system, my SD Card or something else so it always helps to hear other people's experiences. As it stands I think it's easier just to dual boot Tiramisu exclusively for RetroArch until we get a more stable Aroma build.

The only problem is I still haven't found a working forwarder for TIramisu RetroArch. The one listed in the first post of this thread locks up on the splash screen for me, so I have to boot into the Mii Maker everytime to launch RetroArch. It's not a huge deal and it's definitely better than having the entire console randomly lock up but if anyone knows of a working forwarder for Tiramisu or why I might be getting lockups with the one listed in this thread, please let me know!

For the SD card, I'm using a 256 GB Samsung Micro XDHC in a converter. The Tiramisu build works perfectly although I had to delete all of the extra individual core .rpx files in the wiiu folder because it flooded my home screen on Tiramisu...

Yeah I was in the same position, unsure if it was just me or if everyone else was also having the same issue. I think retroarch is actually the main reason people dual boot nowadays. If the aroma was merged and maintained again, I couldn't see a reason why anyone would still want to dual boot, though I'm happy to hear of any use cases people have for it beyond this. I myself don't dual boot so can't help on the forwarder front, perhaps someone else here could be of service. Would be amazing if someone picked up the merge and started updated retroarch again. I'd donate money to see that happen
