PC port for The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap gets its first playable build

Minish Cap has been decompiled for a few years now, but we've heard very little in the way of news when it comes to what most people want out of these decompilation projects: a PC port. A few weeks ago, footage surfaced online of the game running natively on Windows, and earlier today, a build was made available for you to try it for yourself. Hold your excitement though, it's still early days, with the port not having any enhancements over the original GBA release while also packing a whole heap of bugs. You should think of this release as a first look and a bit of a curiousity, as opposed to expecting a full playthrough in its current state.

Regardless, it marks a notable step towards a fully-featured port, with the possibilities really being endless once it has parity with the original release. Those interested in trying it out can find the GitHub release page below, containing both the download and the instructions to get it setup. Note as always that you will need to dump your own ROM. If you have a DS or DS Lite and a flashcard lying around, you can do so pretty easily with GBA Backup Tool.

It’s python it should but I dk t have Linux so I can only compile windows builds
hey how do i use this. i loaded the rom says sha-1 matches and valid. But says not found extract assets. if i hit extract assets, it says install the game before extracting. if i hit install/update it says no windows asset found.

I look forward to the day that all Zelda games are reverse engineered and can be made into native ports.

Well so far the game is very playable despite a couple of bugs here and there.
Unfortunately, I could not go further because I am softlocked at the Mt Crenel Mine.

Essentially, This appeared for some reason, and I assume all the event flags are broken from that point onward.
The NPCs needed for the sword repair never spawned, and I was able to enter the second dungeon early, which then ended in a softlock because one of the rooms is broken and I could not progress any further.

Apart from that, I had a solid 1-2 hours of gameplay with minor bugs that did not really cause any issue, so that's still not too bad for such an early port.

A promising start. I had to spend some time on the discord I found from a YouTube video, but I got 0.16 working with sound on windows. From poking around the discord it looks like there's some forking going on between two hardworking modders at the moment, so this might be a bit funky for a while, but I bet it'll level out sooner or later.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Awesome!

Version 0.1.6 seems to have fixed the softlock point I got into.
In fact, the very same place was mentionned in the issues tracker so it wasn't just me after all.

[edit] Now I softlocked in the boss battle of that same dungeon, lol

Turns out I still have GBA Minish Cap, yay!

Now to dump the rom in my DS and then play the thing in my 3DS cause I do not trust the save features to still be working.

That's awesome! It's incredible to believe that people will do tremendous work for free to release a finished port with so many options. Great work!
