I Recently decided to play a PS1 game on my modern TV to stream to a friend but found out the game can't display a picture on it but does on my CRT, this is a similar quirk I have with older Wii VC games, my modern TV doesn't support 240p (obviously), however I was wondering if there was any way to get around this as i also read i may need a specific converter? The one I have to capture the PS2 along with it's games is the generic PS2toHDMI converter that's like 7$

There are other converters such as the:
- AV2HDMI Compostie Upscaler
- Tendak S-Video Upscaler
- Retrotink

I often hear the retrotink for any console is kind of a optimal device when it comes to thing, though it's way too expensive.
any advice is appreciated.

I'd say the easiest would be to use a PS3 if you have it. If not, the AV2HDMI converter is the cheapest option by far, but results are just there.

Maybe before buying you could tinker with the ps2 settings (rbg vs component) and use GSM/OPL (which I think is included by default now) to force 480i/p.

Oh also how are you streaming to your friend?

i am using an elgatoHD60+ and i output it through OBS

Have you looked into getting a GBS-C by any chance? I don't have one but it can take the 240p signal that PS1 games sends out.
I have not actually, i'll get back to you on that

Edit: I just did a quick search and it's about 89$ on Amazon, not too bad but i may need to save up a bit

Hang on, how are you connecting a PS2 to an HD60+?

Why does it need to be on your TV if you are capturing it with OBS? Why not stream/play it from OBS?

I'd assume the HD60+ can't actually capture 240p.

Lowest afaik it can capture is 480i/p, since 240p over HDMI is technically non-standard (that people abuse anyway  )

because from what i it needs the output from the TV, one HDMI goes in the TV and the other in the console and the USB-c into the PC/Laptop, unless there's something I missed I'm pretty sure that's how it's done so it can be displayed through OBS

But they could play from the OBS display on whatever PC they are using

Do bear in mind that cheaper converters may be known to have worse latency, which could impact the quality of life of the game you're playing. I believe some capture cards tend to have the secondary split output be higher latency as its cheaper to manufacture and often doesn't matter, since it's going to an output that's to be encoded to livestream.

Retrotink are nice because they emphasize lower latency and often outperform TVs built in RCA conversion (if the TV even has it).

If you decide to go with a Retrotink clone, see if you can get any feedback on that aspect.

i watched a video the other night and learned about the latency differences between splitting the output and not doing that, i could look into getting splitters and all that jazz as the most expensive part is the capture card itself which i already have, so i believe at this rate it's just a matter of playing around with both that and the cheaper converter to come to a preferable choice

my friend isn't the one streaming the game, I am. i typically hook up my capture card like explained before, open OBS and share my screen so they can see the OBS program display the game and i make it full screen so they can see everything

I tend to just play games via OBS display itself with my capture card. A bit of latency is there but tolerable. Probably wouldn't notice it outside of rhythm games in most cases. I'm using a different capture card, but it's something to consider if your capture card can display the signal but your TV itself cannot process it.

I've used an upscaler before, and I recently got a CRT TV. It's better than my LED TV for gaming, even PS1/PS2, but try it out and see what you like best.
yeh, i got an upscaler shortly after i made the og post but forgot to update it, just an average AV/composite to HDMi converter and it helped.

I have a CRT,it's what i use whenever i'm not recording footage from my PS2 or streaming it to a friend, granted I could use duckstation
or pcsx2 for ps2 games specifically but that's honestly just kinda pushing things.

(though to anyone stumbling across this i wouldn't recommend that cheap PS2toHDMI accessory if you play PS2 and PS1 games
on a modern TV, im sure anything mentioned in this thread is miles better)

Get a component cable for your PS2, the picture quality is WAY superior over any obscure PS2toHDMI adapter or cable, as it is officially supported and gives you true 480p afaik. I tried different solutions.
Second, not every PS1 game is showing an image on PS2, it is also cable and signal related. PS2 is alright for many PS1 games but not all. A good portion of great games is not working. If you are totally into using original hardware, think about getting an actual PS1 with an ODE adapter SD card access solution and a proper RGB cable, that is the holy grail of Playstation enthusiasm.
But not ideal for LCD screens.
I don't like upscalers, very expensive and still not as good as a CRT, which I personally still use for SD systems.
So which brings me to the conclusion, save yourself the annoyance to use a old SD system like PS2 on a LCD just for PS1 emulation.
Just hook up ANY PC/notebook/android whatever device and run perfect ps1 emulation, every game you want in crisp 1080p/4K, clean scale, many emulator goodies that a PS2 won't deliver plus a good scanline effect and that's the second best thing after running the actual console on the actual TV it was made for. :)
