Steam Controller gets official release date and pricing, set to launch May 4th

After much speculation and a couple of leaks in the past few days, Valve have finally confirmed both the release date and price of their upcoming Steam Controller. Set to launch on the 4th of May, the much-anticipated controller will cost £85 in the UK and $99 in the US.

For that price you'll be getting a wholly unique controller, featuring TMR analogue sticks, four haptic motors, the Steam Controller Puck for low-latency wireless connectivity, and a battery that will reportedly last you more than 35 hours between charges. Those interested in picking it up for themselves can add it to their Steam wishlist ahead of its release.

I cannot believe an Xbox One Controller Wired (!) has over 20 ms AVG latency and Microsoft being fine with that.
That confused me at first, but focus on the details -- they tested latency from controller to computer to monitor response (i.e. click-to-photon), whereas MiSTer Laggy tests only controller lag.

FWIW, the same controller over wire has about 6 ms latency according to public MiSTer test results, albeit GN used a different revision that's not in the test results.

Oh good find. Thanks for pointing that out.

Not to mention the abysmal battery life

That's the biggest issue with them imho, when I play on the PS5 I need to charge them after like 4h or so for games that use a lot of haptics and rumble (I assumed my original controller was faulty, but same happened with the 30th anniversary one, so it's just a crappy battery).

I'm genuinely interested in the new Steam Controller. I can understand the $99 pricepoint, with all the features it has. In my case, I rarely replace my controllers, and I have an Xbox (One, I think) gamepad and the Retro-Bit Sega Saturn controller. Otherwise, I'd be extremely tempted to pick this up.

What I really want to do is wait for reviews from users. I want to know how the D-Pad feels, how compatible it is, etc.

No average person is going to buy this when they can get a Dualsense for 60-70.
Brother, DualSense has pathetic analogue stick durability. The only advantage it has are adaptive triggers, which often causes springs inside to fall out of place. That thing isn't worth anywhere near the asking price.

Steam Controller probably has more features than any other controller on the market, naturally it wasn't going to be cheap. Even so, it's definitely on the pricey side, but it's understandable for what it's worth.

(hadn't seen this announcement earlier)
More expensive than I'd hoped, but it's a day 1 purchase here. I've got two bazzite pc's on my mancave television and a steam deck to the main tv.

I saw the announcement back when it came out and am glad to see what started as rumors make it's way to the real world for once. I bought a secondhand steam controller a while ago and liked it a lot, and will probably get one of these new ones once it comes out. Its pricey but that makes sense given the features.

I think they might have messed up by not making the back buttons as subtle as they were on the deck. As someone who hates how most back buttons feel when not in use I am almost certain these new ones will be too obtrusive.

Just posting a quick reminder for people that the controller launches later today. It's 10am Pacific Time, which I know is 6pm in the UK. Other regions can figure out the timings for themselves.

Fingers crossed you can get one if you're wanting one!

Shiiiiiit, I realised I converted the time completely wrong a few days ago! Thanks for the heads-up, in my infinite wisdom I was that close to waiting for tomorrow at 10 AM :rofl2:
