I thought Google had fixed all of AI's RAM issues and that prices would go back to normal, but the 8TB SSD I've been eyeing is still nearly triple it's original MSRP...

Any price drops will likely be slow to trickle down to consumers.

But as you said, Google's technique is about RAM, not necessarily SSDs and that's also assuming they cut back and not use it as a way to do even more with the same.

SSDs use RAM as cache. I think the manufacturers were also diverting resources from NAND away to DRAM?

But yeah, maybe they'll keep charging these inflated prices since the competition is non-existent and Chinese manufacturers making NAND/DRAM have been banned in the name of national security.

Not all SSDs have a cache but have still increased and it seems to be a flash shortage in general considering that even micro SD cards have been affected.

8TB SSDs have kind of always been overpriced, sadly. Now even more so. They just don't make any sense for consumers.

Even if it is true, it will take ages to go down. The ram cartel will cut production before they let the prices drop.

When Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron "feels" like it. lol

This isn't even the first time something like this happened. I remember when ram prices spiked back in 2013/2014. It wasn't this bad though.

How long did GPU shortage from crypto bullshit last? Assume at least that long.
Do you not realize how much $ome of u$ made during that "crypto bullshit" phase? We weren't buying $1000 GPUs (remember them?) to play Assassin's Creed. The demand was real, the market forces were real. The price increases made perfect sense.
Just like now.

And if the RAM cartels could really just do as they please, why did they allow 2023/2024 to happen, when RAM/SSDs were dirt cheap and they had to cut production because even at those low prices, there wasn't much demand?

By the way, I'm old enough to remember a RAM memory price crisis in the late 70s and 1988 as well. It happens. Markets are like that.

I've been waiting patiently for over a decade for 2TB namebrand NVMe SSDs (like Samsung, WD, etc) to hit the $99 dollar mark (0r less) and stupid market fuckery keeps shooting the prices UP instead of down. It's really starting to piss me off. I need to buy some 2TB drives, but I want a good deal on them, I'm not going to over-pay.

I have actually seen 2TB Samsungs (either 970 Evo or Plus, I don't remember) for €99 on Amazon, that was in early 2023 or late 2022. I didn't get that one though because import tax and shipping makes it not really worth it.

I got a 2TB 990pro for £80 at the end of 2024. They were £130, but Samsung UK was giving £50 cashback. Think that is the lowest I've ever seen it for.

Yeah, the flood of Taiwan didn't help, and also COVID fucked everything up too, now it's Ai semi-indirectly affecting storage prices. I hate this planet.

Its not a Google specific issue. Flash memory / ram order books are full through 2026 and extending well into 2027 sadly.

OpenAI placed orders for up to 40% of the worlds supply, other rivals then did the same. So demand outpaces supply and nothing is available for the consumer market.

Sadly selling ram to consumers is seen as less profitable, which is why Micron (Crucial ram) decided just to exit the consumer market.

One of the larger contracts made by the cucks over at OpenAI cancelled the contract, but the prices will take time to fall back to normal.
