Anbernic RG Rotate announced, a retro Android handheld with a rotating screen

Surprisingly, Anbernic is the first retro handheld company to introduce some innovation this year by way of the Anbernic RG Rotate. The company officially made the announcement today by sharing the following video on their YouTube channel:

While specs details of the RG Rotate have not been announced, Anbernic does note that it features a self-developed ultra-thin alloy hinge. It will also be available in two color options (Aurora Silver and Polar Black) and buyers will have the choice between an aluminum or ABS shell.

I like the design, and the metal body option is cool. But the emphasis on the music player function is interesting. Provided they don't screw up the player software this might end up being its most popular feature.

they already screwed it up by not including a headphone jack

I too wasn't impressed, until I saw that part. I'm always on the search for a good FLAC player. I have a FiiO X1-ii (X1 gen 2) and the interface lag is just garbage. It's to the point of being borderline unusable. I am thinking of just buying FiiO's DM15 R2R CD player and a Snowsky Disc.

So, they reinvented the pocket watch?
Seems like the vibe they're going for with that promotional photo.

Jokes aside, isn't this basically just a worse version of a clamshell? If you really want a heads up display on your gaming handheld, more power to you, but I dunno. I liked the form factor until I realized that this is just a clamshell with extra steps and without the protection a clamshell offers. It looks like it's about the size of a GBA SP, and there have been a number of clamshell form factor handhelds in that size. I don't know why I'd pick this over those.

This feels tailor made to show up on DankPods' "nugget" miniseries of videos immediately.

Ambernic should send him one, along with some food money to feed Frank 🐍💚
He doesn't really look at new stuff. This is definitely more James Channel's thing.

Okay, where are they?

What? Why would any person with a phone use this device to listen to music in the first place? Sure, if your headphones are already connected to it anyway, why not. But what additional value do you see here?

I don't think I'm digging this too much. Previous experiences with handhelds like the NDS Lite and PSP Go just makes me think those hinges won't last for long with repeated use.
Also I think this gimmick is kinda wasted with this screen. Are 16:9 screens that expensive?
Pretty sure its 4:3 because literally everything that thing can emulate used to run 4:3 natively.

Otherwise - not just a hinge, but a rotating hinge....... so e-waste is now getting frailty already built in? lmao

I hate it when people move the goal posts like this
"Haha who would use this"
Lots of people
"oh yeah? Prove it"
Proves it
"Ha, well y'all are clearly stupid enough to buy this junk"

To more seriously address your comment, most people usually buy one. They may upgrade after a few years, but the cool thing is there's a handheld to suit just about everyone's needs. You can find almost anything in the exact form factor, controls, screen size, and power profile you want. Do you want a powerful clamshell dual screen? Ayn Thor. Most powerful android handheld? Odin 3? Tiny Gameboy style that can fit in your pocket with no extra buldge? Miyoo Mini. Single screen with square screen so it's adaptable to different ratios? RG Cube. Etc
