Surprisingly, Anbernic is the first retro handheld company to introduce some innovation this year by way of the Anbernic RG Rotate. The company officially made the announcement today by sharing the following video on their YouTube channel:

While specs details of the RG Rotate have not been announced, Anbernic does note that it features a self-developed ultra-thin alloy hinge. It will also be available in two color options (Aurora Silver and Polar Black) and buyers will have the choice between an aluminum or ABS shell.

It's cute! I I don't need one since I just got an AYN Thor, but I can imagine it being nifty for people wanted to reduce phone usage. Load up music/audiobooks on it for the folded multimedia experience and have it as a way to pass time in transit, at the dmv, etc

Really now? That's like being the first to come up with Xperia Play/PSP Go-esque sliding mechanism when devices before them already had it, just with a keyboard instead of controller buttons. It's a pretty obvious adaptation for something that already existed before.

As for what I think about it, the mechanism doesn't make it that much more compact when in closed position. If repairing hinges is a pain in the ass, I can't imagine how much worse this could be to deal with. It looks like it will be very top-heavy. And to top it all off, since there are no sticks, I'll wager that the specs are going to be just enough to play GBA games.

This feels more like a fashion gadget. Not for me in the slightest.

I like the design, and the metal body option is cool. But the emphasis on the music player function is interesting. Provided they don't screw up the player software this might end up being its most popular feature.

If you think that's a big selling point, notice how there's a glaring lack of headphone jack, so it relies on the USB-C to headphone jack monstrosity... :hateit: and if it doesn't end up using L1/R1/L2/R2 for playback controls, showing music playback is about as interesting as displaying the clock on the screen.

It has Bluetooth 🤷

And I should hope they map the mp3 player controls to the shoulder buttons, it would be silly not to.

Well, no surprises there. My point is that music playback over speakers/USB/BT is not at all an uncommon feature, and considering how thick it looks in the video, all I can say is that not going the extra mile of integrating a headphone jack in all that unused space, and instead including a USB adaptor feels like an enormous wasted opportunity.

Yes, that is weird, considering all their other consoles have a headphone jack.

I don't think I'm digging this too much. Previous experiences with handhelds like the NDS Lite and PSP Go just makes me think those hinges won't last for long with repeated use.
Also I think this gimmick is kinda wasted with this screen. Are 16:9 screens that expensive?
