Sony announces major PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal price increases starting April 2

Earlier today Sony announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player, with the updated recommended retail prices set to take effect on April 2, 2026. In its announcement, Sony said the decision was made because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal – $249.99
Sony also listed updated prices for the U.K., Europe, and Japan, while noting that other territories should check with local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.

This isn't the first time that Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since launch, nor is it the second time. GBAtemp has reported on Sony's previous price increase from April, 2025 as well as the price increase from August, 2025.

As a reminder, the PS5 originally launched in November 2020 at a recommended U.S. retail price of $499.99 for the disc version and $399.99 for the digital version.

I blame you all guys.If you stop buying these shitty consoles sony would have not done this, how the fuck a lame console 6 years old can have its price go 30 percent up when i should have been cut by half?

We don't need nor want that shit. Just stop spending so much money on video games. Minecraft's the most popular video game and it didn't need any of that shit.

Popularity does not mean good. It only means popular. For example, Justin Bieber has 89 million followers on Facebook. Alice in Chains has 5 million in comparison. So AiC should be more like Justin Bieber because he's leaps and bounds more popular? We don't even need bands like AiC because Bieber provides all we really need? Your "we don't need that because this other thing is popular" comparison means nothing.

So you don't understand economics whatsoever, or the actual reasons why this is happening. Not only with Sony, but with pretty much everything else as well. A quick Google search can help you out with that. Saying Sony wouldn't have done this if people quit buying their consoles is quite an uneducated and baseless opinion.

Well Nintendo is no better at all... sadly we all know it is only a matter of time for their price increase announcement soon
Probably more likely than not that they'll do a price increase too, but I do think Nintendo is a better position with more wiggle room to deal with it. Their financials are very good, like having practically no debt (or at least compared to other game companies). Heck, they are soon to drop the price of digital for the US to match the difference it has been against physical in other regions. They could have done nothing to keep taking a few more bucks, but didn't.

Now, besides that, could the decision by Sony to make this change now have to do with their stockpile of components? Their system has been out for years, and sales had been slowing down, so they may not have felt a need to stockpile as many components over time. But with the whole AI situation, it's now harder to get those components without paying that much more. With Nintendo, they launched Switch 2 roughly 10 months ago, so they already needed to start with a large stockpiling of components.

That ignoramus BS is what you tiny brain cant comprehend. Unless you wanna say a 2018 developed architecture and 6 years old and a 7 to 5 nm SOC hasn't been profitable until today? You think a manufactured ps5 slim cost Sony more than 300 dollar? You think AMD still sells their soc at the same price than 2020? The console can be sold at 400 and be profitable. Stop glorifying Corporate greed.

This just reminds me how I got my PS3 - refurbished via retailer I briefly worked at so with employee discount on top, otherwise it just wouldn't have happened. Nowadays - what even is used market?

Sony can go ahead and price hike all they want, since there's next to nothing exclusive to play besides GT7 anyway, and new pricing literally aligns with i7/2070 used laptops that out-potential any console.

Thanks for confirming my comments as being accurate. You don't even understand removing the part of my comment that didn't pertain to you in your reply. 😂

the used market absolutely sucks nowadays, I looked around where I live and with a used ps5 and you'd only be saving like 50-60$ compared to new

That doesn't really fly when the literal hardware components to manufacture the console have gotten that much more expensive.
not sure I'm getting your point. A corporation makes profit. Shareholders want ever more profit. When components get more expensive, even only maintaining same margins requires increasing price.

But then the issue is if the price keeps going up, then people will eventually stop buying. I know the PS5 sells (or at least sold) well. But raising prices on consumers multiple times wont always work.

PS6 will be where it'll split the customers. Some will be willing to pay $1200 (or whatever it'll be) while others keep using their PS4/PS5 until there's a price reduction on it.

I point to minecraft as a good example because it's a much simpler, cheaper, and easier game to develop. It doesn't take 6 year long development cycle, 6000 developers, and a 500 million dollar budget to make a good game. yes, a lot of game developers could be more like Minecraft in its simplicity.

Cut the fat. Get rid of the open worlds, get rid of the mo cap, famous actors, high detail graphics, licensed music, all that shit. Make a good-ass game that people find fun. Now all of a sudden the game doesn't need to sell 20 million copies just to recoup development costs.

I can agree on cutting the high paid actors and licensed music to try keeping game costs down. As sick as I am of open worlds, I don't see that making any difference. High detail graphics are kinda mandatory to keep. No one wants all new AAA games to look like PlayStation 1/2/3 games. I think the majority want graphical advancements with each gen (except DLSS 5, lol).
