How do the change codes work?
I tried Drill, & Fire.. but I got the normal powers when eating an enemy. I even spit the ability out, and sucked it back in.
Same issue for the mouthfull kirby.. it does not seem to work.
^ Do I have to press any buttons for this to work?
The health & speed code works just fine.

Patje made those codes with button activators so just figure out what those are. Looks maybe like dpad.
activate the cheat (ability) you want, absorb any ability you can find in the map, then Spit it out
it will come out as the ability you chose from Patjenova Cheats
Same for me. Use This code.all the cheats works for me, except the time in treasure roads
Don't forget use off code Exit Treasure Road.

First of all there are a few things you should check.
1. Do you use it with {Mastercode}?
2. Are you pressing Left Stick and Right Stick at the same time?
If these checks do not resolve the problem, use the last resort.
EdiZon search
1. launch the game and enter the Treasure Road.
2. TYPE[u32] MODE[==] REGION[MAIN]
3. Press X to change decimal view.
4. Input 0x140864AF and search.

I'm trying to understand the shortcut keys here. What keys do we need to press for these codes:

I'm assuming this is because the game normally calls upon some kind of code that refreshes Kirby's current equipment, and that this code only changes Kirby's power-up state, but doesn't call you code responsible for refreshing the equipment and that's why you need to spit it out and suck it up again?
Is there any way you could make it immediately show the power-up?
Because I initially found cheats for this game via cheatslips, and recently learned that they originated from this thread.
Anyway over on cheatslips I also saw Mouthful ability codes which are like 99% the same code as the one used for abilities, which includes the flaw that you need to spit them back out and suck them backup for them to even work, but unlike copy abilities, SOME of the mouthful mode abilities get destroyed as soon as you spit them out, like for example the rolling tube, Vending Machine and Arch Wing, because of that you can't just spit them out and suck them back up.
Lastly I changed your code a little bit on my end so that you get the ability in question when you press ZL+ZR, and if you also hold:
- DPad Left: Lv. 1 Ability
- DPad Up: Lv. 2 Ability
- DPad Right: Lv. 3 Ability
- DPad Down: Lv. 4 Ability
- No DPad Held: Max Lv. of the ability in question.
This makes it kinda difficult to use multiple ability codes at once, but since the cheat names don't actually mention the button combo, I end up forgetting anyway.

I really tried to find out what those are but couldn't figure it out myself, you can however change them to a button combo of your choice, what I do is use this website for generating ACNH item/villager cheat codes:
https://mpql.net/tools/acnh/codes/
Just choose any old item ID, then choose the desired button combo and press generate.
Then from the resulting code you just copy the first line (the 8000XXXX number) and replace the 8000XXXX number in the kirby cheat code with that.
Essentially the 8000XXXX line sort of functions like an if statement, where the specific value you input determines which key or combination of keys it requires
Then at the end of the code there will always be a 20000000 which functions like a bracket that closes the if statement.
Any code between those two lines is what will be executed if the correct buttons are held
