Presumably u can play original disks right? Just want to make sure there aren't any hardware issues at play here.

It sounds like a usb compatibility issue. Have u tried a different model hdd? Or maybe even just using a usbloader in sd mode.

If using GX, confirm you're running r1282 and not r1281.

All syscheck's look good or good enough. 2nd one looks the best (updated IOS58 and BC), but all should be good enough to do what you want

Thanks for all the kinds words! Sorry for the short reply, just in the middle of reading bed time stories to kiddos so gotta cut it short!

I wasn't expecting a response but here you are, thank you so much for taking the time to read and help. Please never apologise for spending time with your family. That's one, if not, the most important thing in life. To make it brief:

- Yes, I can play original games. The idea is to create personal-use backups to preserve the physical media for longer.
- I haven't tried another HDD model as I don't own one (have 2 of the same, the other is working on a PS3, I've already tried both). Every Loader will work in SD mode and without the HDD connected. I tried different USB flash drives with bad results (black screens when opening a game and Wii not turning on when plugged).
- Regarding GX version, I will have to confirm that later as I'm way past my bed time hahahah.
- Last SysCheck is the current configuration.

Just a quick update:

- The USB Loader GX version is v4.0 Rev. 1282.
- USB Loader GX files are actually loaded from the HDD, per ModMii's configuration. Whenever the HDD is not connected, entering the channel will just take you back to the System Menu. If I connect the HDD, USB Loader GX opens (so it is actually reading the files) but gets stuck on "Reinitializing devices". Before using ModMii, USB Loader GX ran on the SD, and opened normally in SD mode but got stuck on "Reinitializing devices" when HDD was connected.

Heading into Syscheck, if the HDD is connected, it will freeze checking IOS249
This again leads me to think it's your model of hdd that's the culprit

Maybe try editing gx's meta.xml to enable arguments, and change the ios from 249 to 250 and/or 251. If that fails, also try changing the bootios to 250 / 251. If both fail, revert back to the normal meta with args disabled.

The hope is that 250 plays nice with your hdd whereas 249 doesn't. @blackb0x maybe has some other ideas?

Thanks XFlak. It all points to the HDD then cause I told SysCheck to ignore 249 but it got stuck on 250. I will order another model and test. Do you have any suggestions about models and specs?

I'm just unsure cause guides usually say there's no issue with manufacturers. Is RPM a crucial factor? Mine is 7200, should I go this time for a 5400? Maybe less energy consumption?

I'd expect that anything WD or Seagate that's 2TB or smaller should work just fine. I wouldn't pay extra for usb3.0 since the Wii doesn't support it anyway, but these days it almost comes standard.

Generally it's the enclosure that determines compatibility, not the internal hdd itself. I've often salvaged HDD's from old/dead laptops and bought a cheap case from Amazon for about 10 bucks and just inserted the hdd and worked.

There is a usb compatibility wiki (linked to in modmii guides) but it's a pretty outdated and not very well maintained.

Understood. The HDDs I own are Seagate 2.5 500gb, so in theory they should be alright. I'll then purchase another enclosure just to try something different. Thanks for responding, everything has been really helpful!!!

Hello,

Western Digital generally works well with the Wii.

How do you install your games onto your hard drive? Use "Wii Backup Manager" to manage your games, as simply copying and pasting onto your external hard drive may not work.

Heyah, thanks for the suggestion. I do use Wii Backup Manager, but I have the same issues even if there's no games on the HDD :(

Hey XFlak, again thank you very much for your invaluable help!!! You were right, the problem was the enclosure. I've just gotten a new one and it worked out of the box. Thanks heaps!!!!

ModMii 8.0.4 Update Released!

Mostly fixes and housekeeping in this update, but the big news is that the final version of USB Loader GX r1282 dropped with a few extra nice surprises, like being able to sync your wiimotes without having to exit out of the app thanks to contributions from Zarithya!

Edit:
PSA: If you are running a test version of GX r1282 it won't work anymore and you should update to the final version!

If you can, download hard disk sentinel and plug the hdd via usb to your PC.

Hard Disk Sentinel is a program that checks the status of the HDD, SSD, etc. and tells you it's current health.

Where do you get the 22 custom WADs? I've been following the ModMii Wizard Guide step by step, and double checked everything to make sure I didn't miss anything, but on step III-6. "Install WADs" I can't continue because I don't have any WADs on my SD card.

Not sure if I messed something up or if one of the processes failed but it was all going smoothly up to this point as far as I could tell. Is there somewhere I can just download all the WADs and drop them onto the SD card?

You don't want to copy ALL the wads available in ModMii, the wads provided in Modmii's wizards are unique depending on what you entered into modmii

The WADs would be wherever you told modmii to save them, by default it would be in a copy_to_sd folder saved to the same location you have modmii installed. But can be customized by users giving them option of changing it to E: or whatever drive letter your sd is assigned

Found them, Thank you! For some reason ModMii only installed the "apps" and "private" folders to my SD card. Would never have guessed I needed to dig into the XFlak folder on my PC to grab them haha

I just installed version 8.0.4 and when i complete the process through ModMii Skin, I get this error after pressing "Finish"

Can you confirm what version of windows you are running and whether it's 64-bit or 32-bit?

I expect that if you directly launch modmii classic it will fail as well, but plz confirm so that when testing the below, it's easier\faster to test by just double-clicking on ModMii.exe rather than cycling through ModMii skin until it tries launching modmii classic.

Someone else reported a similar issue on discord the other day, for them replacing ModMii.exe with an older version (from v7.0.3) got it working, but that requires .NET Framework which is a dependency I'm trying not to reintroduce.

Can you test the attached version? Just rename ModMii.exe from your ModMii installation to something different, and put in its place the version included in the attached zip, and run it. I'm hopeful after the changes I made today it should work in pretty much all cases.

@raxadian can you also test this on your Windows 7 installation please?

Same results as the previous time, Classic mode doesn't launch at all, in fact I don't even get any error messages.

If you want, try running the following commands (adjust path to modmii.bat if necessary)

Code:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c call "C:\ModMii\Support\ModMii.bat"
Code:
C:\Windows\System32\conhost.exe cmd /c call "C:\ModMii\Support\ModMii.bat"

I suspect the first one will work for you and the 2nd one will fail (this is what happens for me in a Win7-64x virtual machine).

On Win 10 and Win 11 both work for me, the first one will open ModMii using whatever the users' default terminal settings it set to use (terminal vs console host), and the 2nd one will always try and use console host (the preferred\ideal way).

I'll look more into this later on and see. Worst case I have 2 workaround ideas. The first is just using cmd.exe, but the downside is that for many users modmii will open using the terminal by default which doesn't look as nice. The other workaround I could have ModMii try conhost first, then wait to check if it starts, and if it fails, fallback to cmd.exe. But I'll do some more reading, asking around, and see if there are any better ideas.

Ultimately, this is a very minor issue since Win 7 support is officially dropped, and there have only been 1 or 2 users on Win 11 reporting issues with the current launcher, and the beta one I shared earlier today may or may not get it working for them. That being said I'll keep looking into it
