    You can backup the NAND with a hardware mod, update, and then reflash your backed up NAND. People have done this to get stuff from the eShop at times when Gateway emuNAND didn't support the latest versions. That won't work for stuff specifically requiring newer versions though, of course...

    Yes, you can just buy a $10 DS-mode flashcard instead (a 3DS compatible one of course), install one of the "ROP Loader" .nds exploits, and load homebrew in the Launcher.dat format. The homebrew you can run will be limited to ARM9 though. Or you can wait for Smealum's exploit and homebrew loader.
