    Thank you everyone for your input. You've all been a great help. Interesting side note that came out of this, it sounds like all 3DS serials started with C, while all 3DS XLs start with S, and the second letter is what corresponds to the region.

    Thanks, perfect! That's exactly what I needed. For those curious, my US 3DS XL serial starts with SW. The only regular 3ds consoles I ever owned came from Canada (serial started with CW), so I can't confirm whether serials are firmware-region or geographic-region, but good enough for now!
