Valve says that the Steam Machine will be priced like a PC, not a console

Their profit this year alone was over 16 billion USD. They definitely can afford to subsudize it.

"Stop Killing Games" initiative reaches its 1 million signature goal, with industry giants pushing back against it

I feel like they have issue with control, which for them leads directly to profit (or lack thereof). If they can lock you into their ecosystem, why not do that? The cost is nothing for them.

Just because I, the consumer, can do stuff with my hardware or software (I can fix my own car) does not make it inherently less safe. If it does, you've made it wrong. Just look at phones with unlocked bootloaders. You can still make it "impossible" to break into your stuff and steal your data...

Wake me up once they actually do something about it. Can't wait for a custom firmware for my printer. I mean this seriously btw. It's nice that they are considering it, but given their tempo, I won't be around to see it through. I also don't really trust them that they can see through the...

You are not getting me. The law allows you to do anything with the hardware, but the """safety guards""" put there by the manufacturer are actively fighting against you. And good luck getting around them. Not because it's illegal, but because it's hard. So yes, you can do whatever you want...

"Stop Killing Games" initiative reaches its 1 million signature goal, with industry giants pushing back against it

Take, for example, the locked bootloaders. Sure, you can do anything with the hardware. But good luck actually doing that, if you can't use different software on it (which is entirely within your right in the EU). That's what I was talking about. Manufacturers deliberately locking ways of using...

"Stop Killing Games" initiative reaches its 1 million signature goal, with industry giants pushing back against it

Isn't it crazy that you own the hardware, but not the software, so unless the manufacturer allows it, you can't do anything you want with it (e.g. locked bootloaders)?

As far as I remember, reverse engineering is not piracy. We are talking about the server, your gas, not the game (the car). Pirating would mean I got the car by some third-party means, where the company does not gain anything. 4. But you originally said that I bought the car. Now you are siding...

But the car still works even after the company stops providing you with the gas. Granted, you have to find another source, but at least you can still get it. And if we make it "as simple as code", there are even safe DIY routes to make the gas. Your analogy lacks a few important details: 1. You...

But they don't need to release source code of their solution. If they are feeling generous they can give us a PoC version of some basic server which does the bare minimum to keep the game working. We don't need majority of the microservecise they use. And if they don't, the bare minimum they...

Hardware Mig Switch on Switch 2

So the update is not Switch 2 specific?

How can you transfer "improvements", when they are switch 2 only?

Hardware Mig Switch on Switch 2

It's mostly about loosing the ability to update everything and download patches.

Hardware Mig Switch on Switch 2

So, with mig switch now working on Switch 2, how can one actually use it "safely"? IIRC, Nintendo did ban people even with legitimate cartridge dumps (or was that a hoax?). And given that some Switch 1 games require an update, you have to be online to get it first, thus probably getting banned...
