    Check that the sound from the right side speaker is working. (simple i know - but sometimes people replace the top lcd and don't have a soldering iron so they use dodgy methods of connecting the speakers)

    Gaming the best DS (to me) is.....

    I like... DS Phat - For its D-Pad and A/B/X/Y buttons. DS Lite - For its LCD quality. DSi - For its Trigger buttons as they can be easily replaced by changing the ribbon. DSi XL - For its huge screens. Can't really choose a favorite as each one has just as many pros as it does cons.

    LCD's from China are decent, they do exactly what they say on the tin really :-) Beware some of them come with speakers already attached - while others don't so you may need to solder them on.

    Can you feel them when you rub your finger or stylus across the touch screen? If the answer is no - - - i would guess someone replaced the touch screen and while doing it let dust get inside.
