great work! and good news that you got the music thing sorted out. If I'm correct, you're using MaxMod. The .XM format should help you getting longer music with fewer bytes: it uses the multi-track abilities of the DS to render music on-the-fly from a set of samples in the file.

Ok, the tripod thing didn't work out, but I got 3 short videos that are mostly stable. The first video "vid1.mp4" looks the most stable out of the 3.

Thanks! Indeed MaxMod it is, problem is I've got only .ogg files (that I converted to .wav to be usable) from the Spelunky Community Update Project:
https://github.com/tyrovc/SpelunkyCommunityUpdateProject/tree/master/static_resources/sound

As as far as I know there's no way to convert .ogg to .xm? Only reproduction comes into my mind (which is none of my skills :/ )
no hope for an automated ogg-to-xm (or whatever other tracked format), I'm afraid. If noone ever did this, then indeed, it is not an option :/

I was so happy to discover this project! Spelunky is one my favorite PC platformers. Good work so far. I had a few issues playing on my DSi via nds-bootstrap - one, I was able to throw a chest straight into the wall. And two, I couldn't dismount the ladders at the top by jumping and holding a direction. Also, I pressed A at one point after tossing a chest around and tossing a few bombs and this happened. The game didn't freeze, these weird patterns just followed me around with a slight animation.

Once I get a bit more familiar with the game, I can give you some videos of gameplay with this quality.

This is not ran via nds-bootstrap. DSiMenu++ directly boots this.

darkNiGHTS, thanks! Alas I'm aware of these bugs, sorry for the inconvenience, but they're going to be there at least untill next week (I'm just being busy since a month or so but it's fortunately an endgame and I'll be back on SpelunkyDS). Btw, I ordered a DSi XL last week so it's going to be much more fun for me :P

This is amazing, my friend thanks for doing this, this is one of my favorite games and being able to play it on the go with real controls is going to be fantastic.

Wow. I totally missed this one. Spelunky is my favorite game of all time!

Even though I think a 3DS version would be even better. Then with 400x240 resolution we could use the upper screen exclusive for the gameplay!

Thanks for this port!

I hope you do a 3DS version too! <3

@0xdbeef
You did what Derek Yu wouldn't--thank you.

I know I'm jumping on the trainwagon (:creep:), but when Spelunky 2 comes out, any chance you might do a 3DS version? I'm soooooo not begging, but I'm curious to see if you'd even have it in you.

Other than that, really, good job.

Hey @Waygeek and @H1B1Esquire!
Somehow missed your replies, sorry for that. The original content is limited to the cave level, it goes endlessly. I am still adding some small things, like the golden idol or boulder, but got a regular job and after now slightly more than a year of SpelunkyDS I'm less excited about it than in the beginning, and doing other hobby projects like SpelunkyPSP:

actually the PSP version is just a demo, probably won't invest much time in it, but who knows maybe some day I'll deliver Spelunky back for the PC lol.

If anyone interested, code for the PSP version is here:
https://github.com/dbeef/spelunky-psp

For the 3DS version - some people in this thread reported that my version works even on the New 3DS XL, though with cropped screen. Though it's an inconvenience, programming for 3DS upwards involves different libraries than for the vanilla DS and time of doing that is just too high for me.

Lastly, thank you all for kind words, I *am* really happy that people play it.

Is this still being worked on? I would love to play this on the go! Is there a way to change the controls too?

@K3Nv2 Snow Day is pretty fun. My only bitch would be the camera controls, when you move around, say down, you have to move the right stick left or right to get camera to turn and get your view, other than that I like it so far.

From what people say pvp isn't even worth it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
If you can find enough for it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Toilet paper is considered the money, you collect and buy stuff with TP, kinda funny. Graphics are def better than the other games tho, I think they used Unity 5 engine.

I bet most people at the time still watched it in black and white
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Many of them did before colour television was common.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Likely because black and white TV was in-expensive.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
It certainly wasn't inexpensive it cost the same as a new car back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
How much did a 1965 color TV cost?

For example, a 21-inch (diagonal) GE color television in 1965 had an advertised price of $499, which is equal to $4,724 in today's dollars, according to the federal government's inflation calculator.

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@K3Nv2, take into consideration how economy was back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Yeah that's why they listed inflation rates
