I've been at this a few times and I haven't been able to get it to work. I've had my Wii hacked for a while but my drive died and I tried to update it to play GC games and now I can't get USB Loader GX to work since I updated my hack.

I used ModMii to update it. I have HBC 1.1.0 running via IOS58 v24.32. I have the latest USB Loader GX, r1268 and USB Loader GX-UNEO_Forwarder_5_1_AHBPROT. The problem I am having is that the forwarder doesn't seem to work. I can load USB Loader GX from HBC but if I use the forwarder it just goes back to the main menu. It doesn't even go through the part where it says it is looking for USB, loading resources, etc.

I've been trying to get this fixed for a long time and I just need to get it done because my kids keep asking about it. The dol is on the usb drive in \apps\usbloader_gx so it's in the right place. Any ideas? I feel like I've tried everything and I've dome this several times over the past decade or so. Here is my list of files installed generated by ModMii:

Try moving the apps folder to the sd card instead of the usb drive? Also if it’s a flash drive they are notorious for causing weird issues. Best to use a hard drive so you aren’t chasing your tail in circles

It's a solid state drive. I could try an SD card, but I don't really want to have to use both an SD card and a hard drive. It's too confusing trying to keep track of things when I come back later and need to do something. Is there another forwarder I can use?

Keep the games on the drive and keep the loader and apps on the sd card. This is the set up I use and works without any issues.

Well, the SD card works but I really don't want to use it I only have one and it's really old and the plastic is chipped in places. Plus I have 2 Wiis I need to fix. The USB hard drive is formatted to FAT32. Maybe it is just not initializing the USB drive? Any ideas?

You should just try it and rule that out. I know gamestop has small sd cards (like 2gb & 4gb) for a very little amount of money.

It's easier to use like that.

Thanks, but it's really not. That's why I moved away from it a long time ago. Things end up getting saved to both places and it's a pain to sort out and I don't want to have to go out and buy an SD card just to use a work around that causes me more headaches. Plus it's one more thing for the kids to mess with.

Anyway... for posterity's sake, what I ended up doing was taking the SD card that worked and used a partition program to clone the SD card partition to a flash drive that was also not working even though they were both formatted as FAT32. So there is something it doesn't about the partition specifics. I vaguely recall something like that from the past but I don't know how it specifically needs to be formatted. Anyone know?

Which USB port are you using and is it a Wii or Wii U? Do you have an external power supply (or y-cable) for the drive?

It really is easier. It's as simple as only putting your /apps folder on the SD card. Do not put homebrew apps on the USB and nothing will save to both places.

Wii. No external power. I tried 32k but it didn't seem to work, at least not when formatted with Windows. Oh well. I'll just have to make a note in case I need to do it again but I got it working now.

No, it's not. Then you have to make sure all your homebrew is configured to save to the right places and downloaded images as well and if you don't then a few months later when you need to do something it's a big mess trying to sort it out. And if you want to take it to a friend's house you have to make sure and take both and not get your SD card mixed up with theirs or leave it over. I've tried both ways and keeping track of one thing is much easier than keeping track of two, especially when you have more than one Wii.

You get more flies with honey then you get with vinegar.

Usually yeah, but I wasn't catching anything. I've tried it the way everyone suggested but it's a much bigger pain for me and I was just stating the reasons why. I was just reiterating my point to keep the conversation on track because some were insisting I do it their way instead of helping me with the issue. I wasn't 'using vinegar' really. I was just explaining my reasons so people would move past it.

Anyway, this issue is solved. For future peoples (possibly including myself), it is the FAT32 partition that was the problem. If 32k clusters don't work, try a different formatting program or clone the partition from something that works. Thanks all.

Well, as far as I remember, you can't use two USB drives (flash or HDD) at the same time while using homebrew apps. That's why the most used combination is an SD card and a USB (flash or HDD).

Might be wrong though.
