So I got an EVGA 600b power supply. We brought it home and I hook everything up....nothing. It just beeps and then turns off. It does this in a cycle. What is it? I notitcied that the 24 pin connector on the cable has one connector with no pin. I don’t see a socket with no pin on my motherboard. Is that the issue? I also put new thermal paste on my cpu. Did I scratch it? I looked everywhere on the internet. I could not find anything. I can provide pictures, if needed.

Specs (before I upgraded the power supply)
wt 480 watt power supply
Intel pentuim g620 dual core at 2.6 ghz
G skill ddr3 ram (2x4)
Biostar h61ml motherboard
MSI gtx 1050ti
1tb hardrive
2tb hardrive
DVD drive

Thanks!
By the way, I am a pc noob. You are going to see me here a lot.

Was the power supply the only thing that you changed in the setup?

Alright, and you're sure that the CPU fan is plugged in properly?
I think so. It does not go in the other way.

Do you guys think it might be because of which sata power connections I used? Do they need to be In a specific order?

Nope, those can be used in any order. Did your power supply come with a tester? It should look like this:

Yes it did. I thought it was an adapter. How I test it?
Just clip that onto the end of your 24-pin cable, then turn the power supply on. Then check to see if the fan is spinning. If it doesn't, or it spins briefly and then shuts off, it's definitely bad. If does, you might still want to consider contacting EVGA customer service and having them walk you through troubleshooting, but your prospects are looking a little better

I just plugged the 24 pin into the tester and none of the fans spin at all. No display on screen. Though it does not beep! Is that good?

Not good, because at that point that PSU shouldn't be powering the computer, it should be powering itself (if that makes sense). If the fan isn't spinning at all, that indicates that your PSU is dead on arrival, so you're going to have to contact EVGA customer support and RMA it. Don't worry, it's absolutely painless, I've dealt with EVGA before and they're pretty chill about RMAs and will most likely just ship you a brand new PSU after you ship them your broken one

Acually, to correct myself, the psu fans does spin. That's the only fan that spins. Lucliky the local computer shop I bought it from has a 1 year warrenty. So I can take it back there too.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....... That's a little more complicated, then, because that indicates your PSU might be working after all.

I guess that at this point, the best course of action would be to go back to the shop you purchased it at, and then before returning it, tell them you'd like them to try it out on a test bench to see if it does indeed work or not

Okay I will do that when I can. Any suggestions thought if it works on the test bench?

If it works on the test bench, then it would indicate that there's something else in your rig that's failing. I'd remove everything that's non-essential (hard drives, any RAM sticks other than one in the primary slot, GPU, etc.) and if that works, replace things one by one. If it still doesn't work, something would be suspect with either the CPU or motherboard...

On that track, may I ask if your computer was running when the fan broke? I'm wondering if the CPU overheated and fried itself. That seems unlikely, since they're designed to cut power and throttle over a certain temp, but if the fan's not function then it's still possible

Well let me tell you why I even did this upgrade in the first place.
It all started a couple of months ago. My computer when I turned it on, made a lawnmower kind of noise (also my computer is 6 years old). And when I hit the (I was not slamming it) power supply it stopped the noise. And When I put my hand in front of the power supplies fan, the noise was muffled. Due to deductive reasoning, I assumend the issue was the power supply fan. I mostly ignored it until yesterday. When I was playing overwatch (which I bet put a lot of stress on my power supply) I started to smell a burning rubber smell. When I looked up what it was, it was apperently very toxic to inhale. That's where I drew the line. I needed a new power supply. Also on that same day, I decided to clean out my power supply. I open it up, and it was filled with dust! NO WONDER! I sprayed canned air all throught it. I could have called it a day and put it back in, but I was worried about it going out and suging and destroying my computer (or even worse, the whole house!). So I decided to get a power supply tommorow (today). If you are wondering why I bought a new cpu cooler, It was on the day I cleaned my power supply. I decided to just clean everything too while I'm at it. So I was an idoit and took the metal heatsink part off the plastic fan part to try to get a better clean on it (it was pretty dusty too). And I could not get the metal heatsink back into the plastic fan part. I eventually forced the metal part into the fan part so hard, I broke the plastic. Mental note: DO NOT TAKE THE METAL HEATSINK OFF OF THE PLASTIC FAN ON A GENARIC INTEL FAN! Needless to say, I needed a new one.
So thats why I bought those parts.

Ah, ok. At that point, then, I'd take your entire computer to the shop you bought the power supply from and have them diagnose the hardware problem themselves. It really does sound like the power supply is the issue, currently, but I'd be mildly worried that the previous power supply might have damaged something as well. That's really about all I can tell you without hands-on access to the machine, though

I do have an idea as to why it's not working. I have a feeling that is has to do with the 24pin connector. I think that since when I put in the tester, no beeping. And obviously my cpu and gpu fans were not spinning because there was no power to them. Just what exactly is the issue with the 24pin connector?

I guess I should do that huh. I just did not want to have to pay for their services.

Well, the 24 pin connector supplies power the the motherboard. When you take that off, the motherboard never gets the signal to turn the CPU on, nor does the motherboard have any power for fans or peripherals, or the beep code that you were hearing (by the way, what's your motherboard model and what was the pattern of beeps?), so that would explain that.

It's a biostar H61ML. The best way I can describe the beeps is like at the speed of a quarter note. It beeped at a quarter note beat nine times before shutting off to perform for me once again....

Are you positive it's 9, and not 8? 8 would make sense, but if you're positive it is indeed 9 that would be kind of bizarre
