No the Switch, other guides I've seen mentioned holding down the amiibo button while loading. SO it loads the screen but then almost immediately crashes.

I don't see anything in the near future that will allow you to play Odyssey on a non-updated console anytime soon. There may be other thigns but nothing like actually playing Mario. If that helps at all in your considerations.

Let the kid play his games, especially since you bought it for him and not you.

Odyssey is worth the update. I don't care about online personally, so now I'm on 3.0.2 and happy to stay there. If your kid wants to play online I would update in a heart beat. Who knows how long you will be waiting for, depending on what you're waiting for.

Dude what are you doing? There wont be a way to run Game backups on switch for at least a few months, maybe longer. If Team Xecuter releases their thing you may be able to run backups in a few months (by buying a physical modchip for $100 to $200), if you are hoping a homebrew solution then it could take years because all that software has to be developed. Update and enjoy the games.
