Hacking What should I do with a 3.0.0 switch?

Read my above post, quoting invaderyoyo... The PS3 and Vita were in the same place, but they (at least the PS3) got pretty great support, and the Vita, for its time, did well too with homebrew.) You can't base it upon another console. Who knows what'll happen and how much work will be palced into it.

People will want a hacked Switch to play their "backups", come on, we all know that. Oh and emulators? I can play them on my other numerous modded consoles too. Portability? That's what an NVidia Shield tablet is for. I foresee another PS3 like hacking situation where no one bothers to find an exploit or even wants to release one past a super old firmware.

I can play emulators and ROMs on:
Snes Classic
Wii U
Wii
3DS
PC

Why would I want a sixth device to do it on?

1) Sure they will. Of course. Your point?
2) Not necessarily. GCN is probable, maybe even PS2, Dreamcast, etc. Can't do that on your PSP.
3) You really can't compare the shield to the Switch despite its comparable graphics shit. The shield is comparable to the switch in a VERY different way. Enjoy your streaming.

1) You don't know that yet. And even if so, workaround will likely be made in time.
2).. I... what?
If they do come up with a workaround then Nintendo really dropped the ball. Hacked Vitas can't play games that require >3.60 so I'm assuming Nintendo and Nvidia aren't completely incompetent.

Did I stutter?

I can already do PSP, PS2, Dreamcast, and GCN on my PC, why would I want another device to play them. Also good luck getting those emulators to run full speed, they barely run well on the most powerful ARM devices. Tell me something I don't know. I don't own a PSP by the way. The Shield K1 and Shield TV can run PSP games just fine, not sure where you've been.

I don't see hacking/homebrew beyond 3.0.0, and I'm sick of the whole "oh you may as well buy a pre 3.0.0 console lol" Hell no, no one should have to spend another 300 dollars for another damn system to hack.

Don't be a dick. It's unbecoming. And I can't tell if you stuttered. This is over text.

Yeah. Your LAPTOP. Um, because it's far more portable...? I have a lightass gaming laptop which is top of the line, can run PS2, GCN, etc. and every PC game out so far at the best settings, 4k, but I really really wouldn't want to lug this around. Your argument is way invalid. You can't compare a laptop to a switch, man. Jesus Christ. And I didn't say anything about being able to run PSP games on another platform. Jesus Christ m8.

That's irrelevant. You're comparing it to a different console.

Absolutely no problem with that. I was just trying to get people to think about why they're posting in this forum if they don't care about homebrew.

Just because people may want to upgrade their own switches to the newest firmware doesn't mean that they aren't interested in homebrew and the homebrew scene. It's cool to see what people can come up with in regards to breaking open the switch, even if it is limited to 3.0. At the same time there are games now coming out that require a newer firmware so it's a valid discussion to be having.

i was on 3.0, but fuck off stupid exploit waiting times. I've updated on 3.1 and i'. playing Mario Odissey!!!

See, saying things like that is unfair to the hacking community, these things take time. It's cool that you updated and everything but complaining about the exploit waiting times is a bit rude. It's not that easy to exploit these machines and even if they do, making it public has to be thought out.

To be honest, update. What kind of homebrew do you want? Piracy loaders? Emulators?
I say, update and buy the games you think you will enjoy.

Just update. Remember Wii U Homebrew was limited to 5.3.2 and wasn't even stable. I just updated it to enjoy Super Mario Maker back in the day then, and homebrew is long possible on 5.5.1, and even 5.5.2 although the browser exploit is unstable on that version if you don't have Haxchi yet.
Same goes for 3DS 9.2+, where we had to wait, but it's there, even on all versions now! It's just a waiting game, and homebrew devlelopers do their best to develop and test it a lot so bricks won't happen by bugs easily.

So just enjoy your Switch and update it. Forget being stuck on 3.x really. 4.0.0 brings Wii U controller adapter support, and when homebrew arrives on 4.0.0+, then there will be a lot of possibilities for emulators, VC, homebrew games with the Gamecube controller adapter and maybe more controller options. And if Nintendo ever decided to make recordings infinite or atleast up to a hour, forget being stuck on 4.x aswell.
Probably something like HzMod or NTR Viewer will arrive then xD

Here was my mental thinking on this subject when personally deciding whether to update or remain on lower firmware for homebrew.
When we think of homebrew, they can generally fall within 3 categories: console-specific homebrew, universal homebrew and piracy.
Console-specific homebrew is homebrew apps that are only applicable to the console. This includes save game backups, romhacks, custom themes. Anything you can only do on the switch and not on something like the nvidia shield.
universal homebrew is the homebrew that would run on the switch, but could also be used on other platforms like nvidia shield. Things like emulators fall into this category.
Then we have any piracy related homebrew, incuding CFW or loadiine-like game backup.

Since I already have a good phone and a shield portable, the universal homebrew isn't worth staying on lower firmware.
Piracy is currently looking to be very poor for lower firmware. This is looking more like a vita situation where games past a certain firmware will be unplayable, even with a hacked system. The vita had at least a few years of released games to be pirated. With the switch, right now piracy is looking to be locked to the first 7-8 months of games, which most people have already purchased anyway. Because I already own most of the games within that period, piracy probably won't be appealing to me either.
That leaves console-specific homebrew. Frankly, missing out on any games past the first 7 months just for save hacking, romhacks and the like doesn't make it worth sitting on 3.0.0 for me.

After considering these items, I decided to update my switch and just enjoy it for what it is. If I need my homebrew fix I can just go back to my 3ds.
Also after reflecting on my use of homebrew on the 3ds, I realized I didn't use it very much except for NTR streaming.
We'll probably eventually see homebrew on later firmware, even if its far into the future. There's just too many good games on the horizon that make sitting on low firmware not worth it to me.

OP, take these into consideration. Of course nothing about the potential homebrew scene is guaranteed, so take everything anyone says with a grain of salt. Others can help you, but the decision is ultimately your whether to stick with 3.0.0 for future homebrew or to update.

I can't wait to see what comes of the switch scene, but I'm afraid of the fact that the user pool will be too small for a ton of devs to give good support to it. 3DS scene was pretty lackluster for a while until a million games got exploited and then scene grew large enough for people to care.

From someone who's hacked about every device they own, waiting years for 3ds and WiiU hacks but being let down all the time: Update. It's not worth it. Play first, hack later. Buying an console for the sake of hacking before it's legibly hacked is basically a waste of money. If you're so desperate, buy two, but never prioritize a main system for hacking unless the hacks are abundant and worthwhile. I personally didn't give a shit when I updated ages ago, and I'm loving the 10+ games I've been able to enjoy properly because of it.

That's what I'm doing. I was staying for homebrew, but frankly being stuck with such a low firmware and only 7 months of game releases isn't worth it for me.
We'll likely see the switch hacked on a later firmware at some point. And if not, I'll live with one console not being hacked.
