Hi, I don't typically post on these forums, but I'm getting a bit desperate with an issue regarding my old 2DS's SD card slot. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Upon turning on my 2DS today, I was greeted with a message on the Home screen telling me my SD card was "write-protected". I tried getting my SD card out of its slot, only to find it jammed inside the slot. Not sure how that happened (it was fine when I used it yesterday and I don't remember having any problems putting it in the slot), but I was forced to pry it out using my fingernail.

Ever since, I've had trouble putting the SD card back into the slot. Whenever I tried pushing down the SD card, it wouldn't "click" and lock into place like it usually did, it'd just bounce back out of the slot. Shaking the 2DS upside down, and pulling at the "springs" (?) at the bottom of the SD card slot with a toothpick seems to temporarily solve this problem.

The bigger issue is, even when I do manage to get the SD card into the slot, I still get that write-protection warning. I can still access the Homebrew Launcher through Soundhax, so it seems that the 2DS can still read its contents. However, I cannot, for example, export saves through JKSM.

I've double-checked the write-protection lock mechanism on the SD card, and it's clearly in the "unlocked" position. When I plug the SD card into my PC, I'm also given no warning about write-protections. Also, sometimes when I put a toothpick through the SD card slot while the 2DS is turned on, it tells me that it's write-protected even though I didn't actually insert an SD card into the slot. All of this leads me to believe that there's something wrong with the 2DS itself; more specifically, with whatever the SD card slot uses to detect write protection.

Through some Googling, I found this solution:
I too had this same issue after my son had jammed his SD card into the slot backwards. When this happens it bends the switch for the SD card write protect in the slot. Its not the card that is the issue but the slot itself. If you look into the sd slot you will see this switch. It looks like a tiny half paper clip shape. It is on the right side of the slot when the 2DS is laying on its back. All I did to fix it was reach in with a very fine 1mm flat head screwdriver and bend the switch up a little bit. The switch was bent down so the card was always reading as write protected. After I bent it up, the switch would fit into the proper gap on the card when the switch was not in write protect mode and therefore the 2DS would see the card as not being write protected. This fixed the issue on my 2DS.

When I look into the SD card slot with a flashlight, towards the wall where the SD card's lock mechanism would face, I can see a small rectangular-shaped groove, and below that, a squiggly metal wire running diagonally across the wall. I'm not certain whether this wire is the "tiny half paper clip shaped" switch the poster was describing (it doesn't look all that much like a paper clip to me), but when I try to push it up with a toothpick (I don't have any small screwdrivers), I can't seem to make it budge.

Can somebody with an old 2DS that has an intact SD card reader help describe to me how the inside of the SD card slot should look? Or better yet, does anybody have any insight on how to fix this? Thanks.

Lol I have the same issue ... instead of attempting to fix the console itself the quicker solution is to get some tape and put it over the SD cards write protection mechanism
(HINT if you use a micro SD card you can then just leave the "fixed" adapter in the slot)

SD cards tend to get damaged when handled constantly. The tape is a temporary solution that would allow to backup its contents, but should be considered as a final measure in SD card life.

I've seen that solution before while searching on Google. Unfortunately, though, it didn't work for me for some reason. Thanks for the suggestion, though

Can you make a backup on your OS of choice without getting the "write protection" error message?

If not, the it's not the memory slot that's failing. but the SD card itself. Consider getting a new one, but try to make that backup before discarding it.

he should be able to copy everything off, even with write protection.

As funny as it may sound the tape on the SD card trick is a fix for a faulty SD slot not SD card but it matters not as it failed in the op's case

Yes, I can freely move files from the SD card to the PC without a problem. Same goes with transferring files from the PC to the SD card. The only device that gives me a write protection error message is my 2DS.

It's OK there is a lot of text in the op ... some people don't read ... but the problem is he bent the SD slots write protection mechanism... again the SD is fine and works without issue on all other devices and trying a new SD will have the same result

Open the console and solder together the write protection switch... not like there's much to lose (an achievement in 3DS Camera)

Do you know which two points I need to solder / bridge to disable the write protection switch?
I have a 2DS which has the same problem and would like to get it working again...

I have no experience whatsoever with soldering or opening up electronics, so it might be a bad idea for me to try that haha.

If it's just two points then you could short the contacts using, say, aluminium foil and some tape. Just make sure it doesn't touch anything else.
