You have to have at least 1 paid game on Steam to add friends. If this wasn't in place, spam accounts would be rampant.

Right, but can't you have other people add you or is it the same way for adding limited accounts aswell?

I mean you can sort games by cheapest price on Steam, there's usually something on sale for less than 10p, so it's not as though you can't easily get these restrictions lifted.
or just cheat and get a free steam key from all thoose bundle giveaways.
IIRC they qualify as "purchase"

PS; i just added you MSIdemon

Oh I never considered that! OP, do you want a free code from Humble to see if it'll activate your account?

If keys worked to get your steam account un-limited, I would have 10 csgo accounts

They don't

They indeed don't. It used to be that you could do it like that, but due to abuse you need to purchase something from the Steam store for the limit on the account to be lifted nowadays.

cs go is a paid game, i had to purcahse it, what do you mean by "10 csgo" accounts?
I wasn't thinking about that when I typed. whatever

rip, ah well. This looks like the cheapest game at the moment if you're interested: http://store.steampowered.com/app/388340/Super_Hipster_Lumberjack/
You need to spend like 5 or 10 dollars, you can't just buy a cheap game. You also can't get gifted anything to get it unlimited

Would buying steam wallet funds work?

Limited User Accounts

What features are unavailable to me?

Limited users are prevented from accessing several features on Steam, including but not limited to:

  • Sending friend and group invites
  • Requesting access to groups
  • Opening group chat
  • Voting on Steam Reviews and Workshop items
  • Participating in the Steam Market
  • Posting frequently in the Steam Discussions
  • Gaining Steam Profile Levels (Locked to level 0) and Trading Cards
  • Submitting content on the Steam Workshop
  • Posting in an item's Steam Workshop Discussions
  • Accessing the Steam Web API
  • Using browser and mobile chat
  • Adding public artwork and screenshots
  • Creating Steam groups
  • Counting towards Steam group membership

How do I gain access to these features?

You will need to spend at least $5.00 USD within the Steam store. Click here to view your current limited user spend.

Some examples of purchases that grant access to these features are:
  • Adding the equivalent of $5 USD or more to your Steam Wallet
  • Purchasing game(s) that are equal to $5 USD or more from the Steam store
  • Adding a Steam Wallet card that is equal to $5 USD or more to your Steam account
  • Purchasing a Steam gift that is equal to $5 USD or more from the Steam store (Receiving a Steam gift from a friend doesn't count)
Each Steam purchase total will be tracked in USD. If your Steam store's currency isn't in USD, it will be tracked and converted to USD automatically using daily exchange rates.

What will not grant me access to the above features?

The below actions will not remove limited user restrictions:

  • Activating a retail game on Steam
  • Playing free demos
  • Adding a non-Steam game as a shortcut
  • Spending funds from items you have sold on the market
  • Adding/playing promotional trials like Free Weekends
  • Free to Play games (Examples: Alien Swarm, free versions of Portal and Team Fortress 2)
  • Activating promotional CD Keys from hardware or graphic card manufacturers

I received my game(s) as a gift, will I gain access to all features?

No, games that have been received as a gift or via Steam Trading are not eligible.

How do I add friends as a limited user?

As a limited user your account is restricted from adding friends. However, you can still accept friend invites from other non-limited users. For example, if a friend is already on Steam and has spent $5 USD or more from the Steam store, they will be able to add you as a friend from your Steam Community profile. You may then accept their friend invite from your Steam account.
