for some reason, i plug my earphones (with built in mic) into my pc's mic port, but i cant seem to get voice input. i raised the microphone boost to +20, but all i can get are basic sounds, like me blowing into it or tapping it on a desk.

any help would be appreciated, cause its driving me crazy

there is some bullshit by different companies mainly apple.
i guess you using a 3.5 headphones with the 4 rings right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phone_connector_(audio)#PDAs_and_mobile_phones

check if they both work in iphone. probably you will experience that issue in iphone...
and your pc uses the iphone jack standard (or vice versa)
Only things I got on hand are 2 iPods atm

Edit: just tried on an iPod touch 2g (without the built in mic) and it did work using the recording app

it's a mess.. are you sure it's just not your port bad? picking basic sounds seems like it has really bad connection... or not properly inserted...
anyway, i got some apple headphones (dont judge me, i got them free), i am surprised that both audio and mic work, but the volume keys don't...
i suspect that you got a case of the "wrong TRRS standard" either that, or a bad port.
you can always get cheap as hell adapters in ebay to turn your 1 jack headset into mic and audio jacks

I also noticed, my headphones only have 3 rings

Does that change anything?
