So i've tried the basic default firmware for the r4 sdhc dual core, and many games are incompatible with it. Booting dsi enhanced games or many others (such as sonic colors) result in a white screen. To fix this, i tried using ysmenu in order to launch any game, which did work. The only issue is that the games that didn't boot before now crash randomly at different points. is there any custom firmware that can fix this issue?

In my experience that card just starts to fail like that with seemingly no good or permanent fix. Best bet would be to buy a decent card instead of cheaping out and getting the lower priced cards. The r4i gold card from nds-card has worked flawlessly for over a year now.
For a temporary fix try backing up the sd and formatting it. That seems to get it working for a bit, but then seems to just crash more often shortly after.
