I have two 2,5 inch and two 3,5 inch external drivers Toshiba, WD Elements, Samsung Story, WD My Book all have auto sleep timer locked which I cant turn off or set longer time before turning off and breaking Henkaku.

Is there anything I can do about that other than using flash drives ? I wish there would be a plugin which adds such a function to Henkaku to have a menu like that which keeps mass storage devices on as Wii U did.

best to use a form of storage that doesn't have a spin un/down down like a HDD because these spin times cause the problem specially on large 2TB drives that are generally 2 platters , basically either use a SSD or a USB drive(they're practically the same thing , both flash storage)

Note: It can be fixed , just use a constant external power source or someone has to make a plugin that keeps the power going even in sleep mode , both options are still bad for HDD life span.

I don't care about its life span even if would drop to one year its fine for me resetting making henkaku, showing mass storage then mounting the driver is real pain and the mass storage I prepared for PS TV has 5 mins limit. Even while solving a puzzle in a game its crashing.

And buying a new hdd especially when there is no such a warning on the box about this so called smart power management is foolish because I'll check a few forums customer support will say this model dont have timer or you can switch off with its software then when I buy it I'll figure out that either its colour or one character on model code mentioning that its locked too.

Its full of surprises anda little chance because even in the largest electronic stores people don't know that these systems have auto power off mode, actually WDs have total power off, Samsung just sleep mode.

It's likely the HDD enclosure you're using that puts the HDD's into sleep mode, not the drives themselves. The Vita doesn't send any signals to invoke sleep mode on a HDD, and the HDDs themselves don't do it on their own, so it's most likely the enclosure causing the issue.

Pick up a cheapo $10 enclosure on Amazon, or go for some cheapo thing on DX or aliexpress, and you likely won't have this problem. Otherwise, switch to a flash drive or SSD.

I decided to swap these two cases HDDs first opened Casecom it was IDE so althoughI knew it won't be compatible with SATA Samsung StoryI decided to see if its possible to take out Samsung's drive. It wasn't soldered to case.

At this point I have two 2,5 inch cases but both Toshiba and WD 2,5 inch drivers have no screws to open them.

I will give up and usea 32 GB flash drive butI wonder if there is anyone using mass drive after stand by mode without repeating henkaku process.

Drives inside those cheap cases pasing to sleep mode too butI don't knots whether it's due to windows power management or some software of the disk.

Well remember on a HDD it uses disk platters and the headers must seek for a while to find the sector the data is stored in , maybe the fact its suddenly given an operation to do and the timing of the PS TV loading the disk out of sleep mode causes a error, also take into account the PS TV WAS NOT made for HDD storage devices mainly flash storage like its flash memory card.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Extra: maybe if there was a plug in that keeps the data signals going constantly in sync with the PS TV this can be worked round for example using the memory card as a big cache for when the PS TV starts then a small freeze time for it to re switch to the HDD.

Very true because I have all the VPKs and all these games installed on that drive carried movies, music etc. so some applications such a Mai giving late response to requests and HDDs led is blinking although when I restore Mai its giving that C2-12828-1 message as if something wrong with the application.

HDD needs a defrag and a scan for file error but physical surface is fine.

Best is to use PS TV with a flash drive but having all games under your hand is great also if I connect a different source such as a PS Vita memory card or flash drive all folder settings and names I made for mass storage is getting lost thats a huge problem since I have around 130 games on that driver.

best this to try rn is a Hybrid drive with the largest flash cache you can find , make sure the drive spins at 7200RPM or more.

If Vita would have a music plugin with loop support playing a a track without noise which would keep its busy would at least solve the problem while the device running but during standby mode still HDD would sleep although I dont know if there is any data exchange between HDD and PS TV while standby. Surely device is working and bluetooth running since its turning on with the pressing of PS Home button on gamepad.

just unmount the usb before going into sleepmode than henkaku won't break and you can just remount your usb again next time ... not that much work and it might save your hdd some life time and you use less power (which is good for nature and all)

But during gameplay if there isnt file transfer its also crashing. Happened a lot of times while checking a map, solving a puzzle etc. for example while playing a PSP game on Adrenaline an Instant Action of Battlefront 2 can take 10-20 mins when I return to menu its crashing.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Either that disk will spin all the time or PS TV will wait for 2-3 seconds while the device revives itself from sleep mode.

Honestly there is no way round this without a flash storage , another solution is using a 8-16GB PS TV memory card as a flash buffer so anything currently loaded is running off the "flash buffer" which prevents that happening.

Is it possible to use a Vita memory card as buffer, surely that would solve the problem since it would feed PS TV hunger for data but afaik there is no such thing for now.

I'm currently looking into PSVSDK since I need to make a kernel plugin that can handle my USB mod properly , if I manage to even get through all that I might attempt it although as I say now "I promise nothing"

In the first days I thought that I found a solution I was putting PS TV to standby mode while it was communicating with the HDD right when loading another botzone fight of Killzone actually when I wake up the device next day still I could play the game but then I recognized that it was keeping that certain map in memory and it couldnt save my progress to storage when I return the main menu of the game although it was awake while playing during whole night it was sleeping just like me :D

Hmmm , theory : Find out what killzone does when keeping the map in memory and make a dummy plugin that loads dummy data into memory to keep this error from happening.

No matter what I did HDDs as a mass storage device isn't a solution for PS TV. I began to use a 32 GB flash memory.

Is there really anyone using a mechanic storage device for PS TV without any problem such as leaving device in standby for hours and continuing playing ?

You realy think the problem are the hdds?
I rather think the problem lies within henkaku.
I also get storage problems (i.e. savegames arent there if i was in sleepmode to long), and have to reenable henkaku, witch kills my game that i left in sleepmode.^^

That problem you talk about is something different, it happens even on Vita. If you leave it for a long time 10-20 hours on standby during gameplay when you return you cant save.

But with mass storage sleep timer is 5 minutes for Samsung Story. If there is no flow of data between PS TV and Samsung HDD its the end of the "game" :)

As far as I remember from Wii days, you can plug the drive into a PC and tell the firmware to not go into sleepmode by changing a flag... you -may- be able to dig up and ancient guide about it I wrote years ago. That being said, just get a USB stick and be done with it. They are dirt cheap for huge sizes and won't give you any spindown issues... OR you can wait a few weeks until the SD adapter is refined and just stick a huge SD card inside and be done with external stuff forever :D
