First off, I am new here and want to thank you all for the work done on the mini. just amazing!
I am planning to hard mod my mini and add a real power jack to the back of the unit.
Just trying to find the rite jack and proper placement.
The usb power jack is so small and fragile.
With pets and it being moved around, how long will that jack hold up.
A simple old school power jack gives me more power options. batteries, offgrid, super portable...
so if power is injected into the box not using the usb jack...
can the USB be used for mass storage?
you are reading and writing thru it now via usb
just a thought.. it would be crazy for game storage..
a quick google search shows, no one is talking about this.
can the usb jack be usefull?

thanks and take care

The USB port is client-only. It's not able to be used as a host to USB drives and such - you need Type-C for that.

I don't see how modding the Classic to have a barrel-connector would be of any benefit. You can already buy and use a standard cellphone booster battery for dirt cheap and use them.

The OP already mentioned the general fragility of USB connectors. For something like this I tend to just buy an extension and tape that on to take the strain instead but I suppose that does not look brilliant. That said I agree there are a million different means of generating 5V and less than 1A on the go, and if the OP is thinking something more like UPS then most of those have USB out these days and it is not hard to add them either

I am not banking this mod on freeing up the usb port for data use, just thought it would be amazing..
I mean a few months ago this box only played 30 pre loaded games... now look at the porting..
I am waiting for a kodi port "just for fun" by someone bored and blessed with the ability to code..
but for me I just want nes games on it, maybe snes also.. but that's off topic.
If this usb jack is anything like the hdmi jack on a ps4... it will fail
I have replaced so many hdmi's.. it's crazy and this usb jack looks very fragile.
tech is not made to last.. and I will do what I can to make it last..
so looking at the motherboard..
I would say this thing was going to have a power jack, but they cut it out.. cost savings prob..
you can see the footprint of the "jack" beside the usb jack.
making me wonder, what the usb could of been used for.. save game backups?
my connections have been made for power , now to find a jack.
would be nice to find one that mounts to the main board.
also two 18650 will fit inside the case, possibly 3 but it's snug.
not sure I like the 18650's in there, but it's a option.
here are some photo's showing my progress so far.. if the links work
take care
