ROM Hack How do cheats work for VC games?

I have seen some NTR cheat plugins for a few VC games, but they are not for the games that I would like to have cheats for.
Do you have to find the values through NTR (if so, how do I go about that; what data type do I look for?), or do you use something like Game Genie codes?

Look up Gateshark2NTR. Then look up gateway cheat creation. It's done like using Cheat engine on PC but you have to make RAM dumps from the 3DS and compare them.

I was trying that method (with NTRDebugger, not using RAM dumps) and could not find the values that I was looking for, though it works for non-NTR games.
What kind of thing should I be looking for? For example, if I try to find health, which of these kinds of data types should I be using: 2-byte, 4-byte, 8-byte, text, etc.?

On a different subject (not VC), how do people make those "Save Anywhere" cheats?
I have seen them in various games on other systems, but I cannot find out how they are made.

You should load a game, look directly at the value you are trying to change, dump RAM, change value you want to change by any increment, dump ram again. Then search using 8-byte for the original value, then double check it's the correct value by comparing it to the second dump using a hex editor to make sure the value in the second dump is the value you set the original value to. Frankly, it's a nightmare.
