With a computer like that it's not even worth upgrading. You should just get a new computer all together. (Building it yourself ofc.)

Yeah, but I really don't want to invest on a new PC when the Switch is realeasing in a few months, and if I did get a PC, my budget would be $500.

Looking at the motherboard, there is virtually no room for expandability. It's really just horrible. No HDMI support, no support for DIMMs higher than 4 GB, and an outdated CPU slot. The computer doesn't even have a GPU. I HIGHLY recommend building a new computer.

I vote new system too. You can easy build a better system for $500, even if you had to cannibalize the HDD and use a cracker for the Windows license.

Hell, Intel Iris 540 is better than the graphics in that thing. I'll put together a list in the next half hour so watch this space (it wont have intel graphics ofc)

What about this? http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Futurdreamz/saved/PbNQ7P

It does assume you will use a more dubious means of running Windows (or run Linux), but I think it's fairly potent and it can be easily upgraded and overclocked later on. You can play around with the exact parts used a bit but this might be the best part range without sacrificing future upgradeability.

So, I recently discovered that I could upgrade my PC that is years old. But I don't know what components to buy, and I don't want to buy something that isn't compatible. So, what do you guys recommend I should buy?

Well, your computer is pretty ancient. Any new fancy parts you buy will be held back by the rest of the parts.

Wait until february and buy a new AMD machine then, if you can wait. They release a new line of processors around then that'll hopefully be light-years better than the current offerings and compete with Intel chips again.

Right now you've got an fm1 socket motherboard, and there have been about 2 or 3 new sockets since the fm1. something like that. But yeah, the new am4 is coming out in february hopefully, so just save up until then.

I think so, but the stock cooler on locked Intel CPUs is fine so no need for the big one. You should be able to use the money you save towards an i5-6500 which has four cores, but that does add another $50 to the total.

If your budget is stretched I'd recommend dropping to the 1070 or a Rx 480, as you can always pick up another one to run in SLI/crossfire.
