Hardware Does Wii U Support 4TB HDD?

I read some old threads and got really confused. Some posters said Wii U only support up to 2TB. Some said 7200 rpm would give error, so 5400 rpm...

So can anyone clarify on this matter?

I think if you try to use anything above 2tb it will be formated to 2tb. (Plus their isn't even that many games to use 4TB. 1TB should be more then enough considering you can only play wii u games on a drive)

What do you mean by this? Since the Brazillian exploit is ready, I can back up my nephews' Wii U disc and install to the external drive (without buying the Eshop version). The internal 32GB is no where near enough to keep all these back up. I try to buy thee largest affordable drive so it save time in the future moving the game back up around.

I can understand but the wii u doesn't have enough good games to buy a 2TB hdd for. 1TB should be more then enough to play every wii u game that is worth playing.

What a meant was that you can't use a wii u formatted HDD with vwii meaning you shouldn't buy a big HDD

i tested it will format it but wii u will max it to 2tb

I think because up to 2TB you can use a MBR table and above 2TB you need a GPT table and the WiiU can't handle the GPT table.

7200 RPM if you can, 2 TB is plenty, I recommend Western Digital.

also, as i said in the previous thread, your 4tb hdd will be formated to 2tb, however, you ca n still use this same hdd later for other use, format it on windows and it will go back to 4tb. i tested and it worked that way (at least with a 3tb hdd)

Exactly. The wii u barley has 1tb of good games

certainly not for wii u, but as said in my sig, i use a 3tb ext. hdd for plexmedia server

Sure, you could get 4TB for $100 but what's the difference if you can get 2TB for roughly half?

Even if you installed every available game on the ticket website you would still have 347GB left on a 2TB hard drive

Assuming you played every game for 20 hours 6 hours a day every day it would take you 2.18 YEARS to finish them all...

What I'm saying is... 2TB will be more than enough given the fact that unlike the PS4/Xbox One the Wii U games are comparatively small

Just to clarify, 2TB is 2/3 of 4TB price (same make), hence my point 4TB is cheaper in a sense (not with Wii U only uses 2TB)

Appreciate your input. I am anticipating the scenario when IOSU & REDNAND get a proper release where you can use one large HDD for both Wii & Wii U. So 2TB for Wii U & 2TB for Wii, GameCube emulator....

I want to keep all thing in one place (when it becomes possible). This is for nephews, and they're still kid so loading back up from HDD is better to keep the discs safe as well as they switch between games quite often (kids' attention span is short). They may not complete all games, but they do played all the games we have quite often.

Also down the year, perhap Switch may support digital Wii U or Wii games and larger HDD capacity...

If you're buying in anticipation of an IOSU-enabled loadiine then you'd in theory be able to store loadiine games on a USB partition

In that case I'd say get the 4TB drive... you'd at least be able to use half of it with the Brazilian method...

The downside is that you'd probably have to re-format it to use it when a usb-enabled backup loader comes out...
